What are sweepstakes casinos in simple terms?
A sweepstakes casino is a website or app where you can play casino-style games — slots, blackjack, roulette — completely for free. You don't deposit money to play, and you don't place real money bets. Instead, the platform gives you virtual coins when you sign up, and you use those coins to spin the games.
The reason people play is that one type of those coins — called Sweeps Coins — can be exchanged for real cash prizes once you've played with them. You didn't pay for them, but the prizes they earn you are real money, paid to your bank account or by gift card.
Think of it like a prize draw that runs continuously. The platform runs promotions and gives away Sweeps Coins for free. You use those coins to play games. If your balance grows, you can cash out. The whole thing is legal in most US states because no purchase is ever required to participate — you always have a free way to get more coins without spending a single dollar.
The two currencies — Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins
Every sweepstakes casino uses two separate virtual currencies. Understanding the difference between them is the single most important thing to grasp before you start playing.
- Gold Coins are the entertainment currency. You use them to play games for fun. They have no cash value — you cannot exchange them for money, and winning with them doesn't earn you anything you can cash out. Think of Gold Coins as arcade tokens. You can buy more of them if you want to keep playing, or earn them for free through daily bonuses. But they don't pay out.
- Sweeps Coins are the prize currency. When you play games using Sweeps Coins and build up a balance, that balance can be redeemed for real cash prizes — usually paid by bank transfer or gift card. Sweeps Coins cannot be purchased directly. You earn them through free sign-up bonuses, daily logins, mail-in entries, and referral programs. This is the key legal point: because you never have to pay to receive Sweeps Coins, the whole system qualifies as a lawful sweepstakes promotion rather than gambling.
You always choose which currency you're playing with before you spin. Most players start a session by switching to Sweeps Coins mode so their play actually counts toward redeemable prizes.
How to create a sweepstakes casino account
Creating an account takes around two to three minutes. Here's what to expect.
- Go to the platform's website or download the app: Visit the sweepstakes casino you want to join. Most major platforms have both a website and a mobile app. No payment details are needed at this stage.
- Click Sign Up or Register: You'll be asked for your name, email address, date of birth, and home address. Some platforms also ask for a username. You must be 18 or older to register. Some platforms require 21 or older.
- Verify your email: Most platforms send a confirmation email straight away. Click the link in that email to activate your account. Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive within a few minutes.
- Receive your free sign-up coins: Once your account is active, your free Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins are credited automatically. No purchase needed. The amount varies by platform — some give as much as 25 free Sweeps Coins on sign-up.
- Set up your profile and start playing: Add any additional account details the platform asks for and navigate to the game lobby. You're now ready to play. Switch your active currency to Sweeps Coins to play for prizes.
You don't need to verify your identity to create an account or to start playing. Identity verification is only required when you want to redeem prizes for the first time — and it's worth doing this early to avoid delays later.
How to earn Sweeps Coins for free
Because Sweeps Coins can't be purchased directly, platforms must give them away through free channels. This is a legal requirement — not a perk. Here are the main ways to build your Sweeps Coin balance without spending anything.
🎁 Sign-up bonus
Every sweepstakes casino gives you a set number of free Sweeps Coins just for creating an account. This is credited automatically and requires no purchase. The sign-up bonus is your starting balance for prize-eligible play.
📅 Daily login bonus
Log in to the platform each day and receive free coins — usually a mix of Gold Coins and a small amount of Sweeps Coins. Stake.us gives 1 full Sweeps Coin every day you log in. Other platforms give smaller daily amounts. These add up significantly over time if you check in consistently.
✉️ AMOE — free mail-in entry
Every sweepstakes casino is legally required to offer a free Alternative Method of Entry. You send a handwritten letter to the operator's registered address and they send Sweeps Coins back to your account — typically 2 to 5 SC per request. It takes 2 to 3 weeks for your entry to be processed, but it costs nothing. Postage is the only expense.
👥 Referral bonuses
Invite a friend to join through your personal referral link. When they sign up and meet basic requirements, both you and your friend receive free Sweeps Coins. Most platforms pay between 10 and 40 SC per successful referral — more than you'd earn from months of daily logins.
📱 Social media giveaways
Platforms regularly post promo codes and coin giveaways on Facebook, Instagram, and X. Following official accounts and checking in every few days is one of the easiest ways to pick up extra free Sweeps Coins at no cost.
What games are available at sweepstakes casinos?
The game libraries at sweepstakes casinos have grown a lot in recent years. Most platforms now carry the same types of games you'd find at a licensed real money casino, built by many of the same software providers.
- Slots are the most common game type and make up the majority of every sweepstakes casino's library. These work exactly like real money slots — you spin the reels, land winning combinations, and your Sweeps Coin balance increases based on the payout multiplier. Most platforms carry hundreds of slot titles ranging from classic three-reel formats to modern video slots with bonus rounds. For a guide to getting the most from slot play at sweepstakes casinos, see our free spins guide.
- Table games including blackjack, roulette, and baccarat are available at most platforms in RNG (computer-generated) format. The rules and gameplay are identical to their real money equivalents. Blackjack still uses basic strategy. Roulette still pays 35:1 on a straight-up number.
- Live dealer games are available at select platforms including Stake.us, McLuck, and MegaBonanza. A real dealer in a real studio deals cards or spins a wheel via HD video stream, and you play along using Sweeps Coins. It's the closest free-to-play experience to a physical casino table.
- Instant win games such as scratch cards and keno are available at most platforms for quick-play sessions.

How to play — step by step
Once your account is set up and you have Sweeps Coins in your balance, here's how a typical session works.
- Select Sweeps Coins as your active currency: In the game lobby or within the game itself, look for a currency toggle. Switch it from Gold Coins to Sweeps Coins. Any spins or hands you play will now come from your SC balance and count toward your redeemable prize total.
- Choose a game: Browse the lobby and pick any game that interests you. For prize-focused play, look for higher RTP (Return to Player) percentage games — these pay back more of your coins over time. Slots typically show their RTP in the game information section.
- Set your stake size: Choose how many Sweeps Coins to bet per spin or per hand. Starting with a smaller stake — 0.10 SC per spin, for example — stretches your balance further and gives you more chances for the game's bonus features to trigger.
- Play and watch your balance: Your SC balance will go up when you win and down when you lose. This is normal. The goal is to build your balance over time through consistent play, not to win every spin.
- Meet the play-through requirement: Before you can redeem, you need to play through your SC balance once (1x at most platforms — Stake.us requires 3x). This means placing total bets equal to your balance. It counts every bet regardless of whether it wins or loses.
How prize redemption works
This is the part that makes sweepstakes casinos genuinely valuable. Once you've played through your Sweeps Coin balance and met the play-through requirement, you can redeem your remaining SC for real cash prizes.
The redemption process is straightforward. Go to the cashier or redeem section of your account, choose how many SC you want to redeem, select your payout method — bank transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency depending on the platform — and confirm the request. Before your first redemption you'll need to complete identity verification by uploading a government-issued ID. This is a one-time process that usually takes 24 to 48 hours.
Bank transfers are the most common method for real cash payouts and typically settle within 3 to 10 business days depending on the platform. Some casinos also offer Skrill for faster digital transfers. Gift cards are delivered by email faster, but they give you store credit rather than cash in your bank account. For detailed redemption speeds and minimum amounts across all recommended platforms, see our real money prizes guide.
The AMOE — why it matters legally
AMOE stands for Alternative Method of Entry. You'll see this mentioned in every sweepstakes casino's terms and conditions, and it's not just a formality — it's the legal foundation that makes the whole sweepstakes model lawful.
Under US federal sweepstakes law, a prize promotion becomes gambling if a purchase is required to win. Because sweepstakes casinos offer the AMOE mail-in route — where anyone can receive Sweeps Coins for free by post — no purchase is ever technically required. This one requirement is what allows sweepstakes casinos to operate legally in most US states without a gambling licence.
In practice, most players earn their Sweeps Coins through sign-up bonuses and daily logins rather than the mail-in route. But the AMOE must always be available and genuinely accessible. Platforms that remove or restrict the AMOE would lose their legal basis for operating.
Are sweepstakes casinos available in your state?
Sweepstakes casinos are legal in approximately 38 US states. Several states have passed explicit bans in recent years including California, Washington, New Jersey, Michigan, Connecticut, and Montana. A handful of other states restrict the model through general gambling laws — Nevada, Idaho, and Louisiana among them.
If you're unsure whether sweepstakes casinos are available where you live, check our full legal sweepstakes casino guide for a state-by-state breakdown. Every platform on our recommended list also checks your location automatically at the point of sign-up and will tell you if your state is not currently supported.
Key sweepstakes casino terms explained
Here's a quick reference to the most common sweepstakes casino terms you'll encounter.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Gold Coins (GC) | The entertainment-only virtual currency. No cash value. Used for fun play only. Can be purchased or earned free. |
| Sweeps Coins (SC) | The prize currency. Earned for free only — never purchased directly. Can be redeemed for real cash prizes after play-through. |
| Play-through requirement | The total amount of bets you need to place using SC before you can redeem. Most platforms require 1x — place bets equal to your balance once. Stake.us requires 3x. |
| AMOE | Alternative Method of Entry. The free mail-in route to receive SC without purchasing anything. A legal requirement for all sweepstakes casinos. |
| Redemption | Exchanging your Sweeps Coin balance for a real cash prize via bank transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency. |
| RTP (Return to Player) | The percentage of all coins wagered that a game pays back over millions of rounds. A 96% RTP means 96 coins paid back for every 100 played. Higher is better for the player. |
| Verification (KYC) | The identity check required before your first prize redemption. You upload a government-issued ID to confirm your name, age, and address. A one-time process at each platform. |
| Daily login bonus | Free coins credited to your account for logging in each day. Always includes Gold Coins and usually includes a small amount of Sweeps Coins. |
| Referral bonus | Free SC credited when someone signs up using your personal referral link. Usually the highest single free SC earn available outside the sign-up bonus. |
What sweepstakes casinos are not
It's worth being clear on what distinguishes sweepstakes casinos from licensed real money casinos, since the games look very similar.
Sweepstakes casinos are not regulated by state gaming authorities. They hold no gambling licence. They do not accept real money deposits for wagering. Prizes are awarded under sweepstakes law rather than gambling law. This is why they're available in states where real money online casinos are not — and why they can never replace a licensed casino for players who want the full regulated real money experience.
Licensed real money online casinos are currently available in Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. If you're in one of those states, you have the option of both. If you're elsewhere, sweepstakes casinos are your legal free-to-play option.

Conclusion
Sweepstakes casinos work by giving players two currencies — one for fun, one for prizes — and requiring that the prize currency always be available for free. You sign up, receive free Sweeps Coins, play any eligible game, meet a simple play-through requirement, and redeem your balance for real cash. The games are built by the same software providers as licensed real money casinos. The payouts are real. And no purchase is ever needed to participate.
The main differences from a real money casino are how you fund your account (free coins rather than deposits), where the platform is available (most US states rather than just four), and how prizes are paid out (bank transfer or gift cards rather than direct PayPal or Venmo). Once you understand those differences, getting started takes about five minutes.

FAQs
Are sweepstakes casinos free to play?
Yes. Sweepstakes casinos are free to join and free to play. You receive Sweeps Coins on sign-up with no purchase required, earn more through daily logins and mail-in entries, and can redeem prizes without ever spending a dollar. Optional Gold Coin purchases are available but never required.
What is the play-through requirement?
The play-through requirement is the total amount of Sweeps Coin bets you need to place before your balance becomes redeemable. Most platforms set this at 1x — meaning you place bets equal to your balance once across any eligible game. Every bet counts toward the total regardless of whether it wins or loses.
How do I get Sweeps Coins without buying anything?
Through your free sign-up bonus (credited on account creation), daily login bonuses (credited each time you open the app), the AMOE free mail-in method (send a handwritten letter to the operator), referral bonuses (invite friends who sign up), and social media promotional codes.
Can I really win real money at sweepstakes casinos?
Yes. Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for genuine cash prizes paid by bank transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency. The prizes are real. Identity verification is required before your first redemption, and a minimum SC balance must be reached before you can request a payout.
What games can I play with Sweeps Coins?
Most slots, table games (blackjack, roulette, baccarat), and instant win games in the platform's library are eligible for Sweeps Coin play. Live dealer games are available at select platforms including Stake.us, McLuck, and MegaBonanza. Check each game's information section to confirm it accepts Sweeps Coins.
What is the AMOE?
AMOE stands for Alternative Method of Entry. It is the free mail-in route to receive Sweeps Coins without making a purchase. You send a handwritten request to the operator's registered address and receive SC in return — typically within 2 to 3 weeks. Every sweepstakes casino is legally required to offer this method.
Do sweepstakes casinos work in all US states?
No. Sweepstakes casinos are available in approximately 38 US states. States with explicit bans include California, Washington, New Jersey, Michigan, Connecticut, and Montana. Check the platform's sign-up page from your current location to confirm availability in your state.
