Race Analysis Runners 12 Going Standard - Tapeta Distance 7f 36yards (1450m)

Race Overview

An interesting novice event run ver the extended seven furlongs on the Tapeta All-Weather surface, this race is restricted to three year olds and upwards who have so far run in no more that four races.

A number of top yards are represented in this contest by horses who are open to considerable improvement, and there is every chance that the race could throw up a number of horses to follow in the weeks and months ahead as they go handicapping.

Favourite Moqarrab

Represents Godolphin’s Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by Jim Crowley (pictured), he won in taking fashion on his second career start over course and distance in December. He hasn’t been since but the $400,00 yearling could be a decent prospect.

Other Contenders

There are a number of likely dangers to the forecast favourite including other previous course and distance winners, David O’Meara’s Giant’s Treasure and The Chemist, trained by Roger Varian (pictured). Flamenco and Spiced hail from the powerful William Haggas yard, and others such as Shamlahar and Poppy Love have already shown ability.

Race Analysis

This is a tricky race with a number of horses open to taking a sizeable step forward. Moqarrab built on a promising debut fourth at Newmarket in November to win with plenty in hand over course and distance in December but hasn’t been since. He may well have been given time to strengthen up, or he may have had an issue, but he rates a fair prospect and with his yard finally in form should go well.

Giant’s Treasure won over course and distance in March in eyecatching fashion but was a big disappointment when odds-on at Catterick in a five-runner affair a month ago. There might have been a genuine excuse, or it may simply be that he is better on the Tapeta than turf. His 7lb penalty however makes life tougher here. The Chemist, a Dutch Art filly out of a 6f listed winner, failed to shine in her first two starts on turf but was a revelation here last time out, making all and  popping up at 20/1. There appeared no fluke about the result and she seems to be progressing well.

William Haggas sets a puzzle in saddling two here, the once raced Flamenco, not knocked about when a respectable fourth on debut at Newmarket earlier this month, and the debutante Spiced, who hails from a fine family and is a half-sister to the 2006 Group 2 Molecomb Stakes winner Enticing, also trained by Haggas. The market should guide as to expectations for this pair but it wouldn’t surprise to see Spiced go well on debut.

Getting the filly’s allowance though, POPPY LOVE is a sporting suggestion having run very well when staying on strongly into third here four weeks ago on debut. Tom Dascombe’s horses are running back into form after a quiet spell so this Harbour Watch filly may surprise. Simon Crisford’s Shamlahar is another to have run well first time out and adds further intrigue to a fascinating contest.
