Race Analysis Runners 8 Going Good to Firm Distance 6 furlongs (1200m)

Race Overview

A competitive six furlong handicap for three year olds and upwards run on the straight track at this popular North Yorkshire venue in “Herriot Country”, the event is open to horses rated between 76 – 95 and carries prize money of £15,000.

This is a track that places the emphasis on speed, being completely flat, so it often pays to race prominently. It wouldn’t surprise to see a number of this year’s contenders appearing in big sprint handicaps later on in the season such as the Portland Handicap and the Ayr Gold Cup.

Horse racing Richard Fahey

Favourite Aljady

Trained by Richard Fahey (pictured) and unbeaten in two 6f novice events, this son of Bated Breath may prove to be a useful performer and makes his handicap bow on his third career start off a mark of 90.

Other Contenders

There are plenty of horses in with a chance. David O’Meara and Danny Tudhope team up with the in-form Muscika, while big handicap regulars such as Watchable (also trained by O’Meara), Pipers Note and Orion’s Bow will doubtless have their supporters, along with course specialist The Armed Man.

Race Analysis

Based on his two runs from two wins it is impossible to knock the three-year-old Aljady, but this is a much harder task than his Redcar novice auction successes to date. He may well be starting his handicapping career on a fair mark, but it is hard to know just how good the form of those two wins actually is at this stage. We’ll know more after this step up in grade.

Muscika and Watchable represent David O’Meara and both are capable of going very well here if things drop their way. Muscika seems to be happy in the visor this season and his good win at Ayr on his penultimate start followed by a solid effort off a 6lb higher mark at Nottingham last time gives him a decent chance. An extra 3lb rise means he’ll have to improve again to score. Watchable is useful on his day but has fallen to one of his lowest every ratings after two ordinary recent efforts. He isn’t out of it if bouncing back but looks a risky proposition.

There is no doubt that THE ARMED MAN loves this course and distance having won four time in just six visits to this North Yorkshire track. He goes well on the prevailing fast ground, and last time out Chris Fairhurst’s gelding led a furlong out before staying on well to score by three-quarters-of-a-length under Paul Muir, who again takes the ride and claims a valuable 7lb. This is tougher, but he is in form and should go close to making it 5 from 7.

Pipers Note is dropping down the weights and it wouldn’t surprise if he were to produce an improved display off an appealing mark, while Orion’s Bow, who rattled off a superb five-timer two season’s ago before finishing runner-up in the Stewards’ Cup, hasn’t been at his best on his last two outings, although the latter was over 5f which wouldn’t ideally suit him these days.

Top weight Wentworth Falls’ claims cannot be dismissed either, the six-year-old now set to race off a mark 2lb higher than his last win, which came at Redcar in April last year.
