Race Analysis Runners 5 Going Good to Firm Distance 6 furlongs (1200m)

Race Overview

This £55,000 six furlong listed contest is open to three-year-olds and upwards and is usually won by a sprinter hovering between good handicap and pattern race class.

Five of the last seven renewals of this race have been won by either Richard Hannon Senior or Junior, but that yard is not represented this time around. Mokarris has already been declared a non runner meaning just five will go to post, but it still looks an open affair.

Favourite Shabaaby

Owen Burrows’ colt, the mount of former champion jockey Jim Crowley, may well head the market having posted a promising effort on his seasonal return when third in last month’s ;isted Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury.

Horse racing Mark Johnston

Other Contenders

Northern raider Mythmaker lost about by just a neck in this race 12 months ago, and Dancing Star on her day is a smart sprinter. Three-year-olds Cardsharp, trained by Mark Johnston (pictured) and Lady Dancealot, make up the quintet for what promises to be a fascinating contest.

Race Analysis

Bryan Smart’s Mythmaker is following an identical route to last season when he won the Pertemps Conditions Stakes at Haydock before failing narrowly to follow up in this event, going down by just a neck to Eqtiraan. The six-year-old gelding was beaten just a neck in the Haydock race this time, so maybe things will be a mirror image of 12 months ago and he could just scramble home in this contest. He should certainly go close.

SHABAABY looks the percentage call however, having done litle wrong on his first start of the term when beaten just a length-and-a-half by Never Back Down in a good listed event at Newbury in which another of today’s rivals Cardsharp could only finish sixth, four lengths behind the selection (see video below). The Kyllachy colt won two of his four starts last term as a juvenile before being a beaten favourite when only fourth in the listed Rockingham Stakes at York last October. He appears to have done well from two to three, and with his yard in good form is expected to take this on the way to even better things.

Cardsharp was a fine two-year-old, finishing third in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot before putting up a cracking performance to beat the smart US Navy Flag by nearly two lengths in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket. He went on to finish third in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York, and the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at HQ, but in three runs so far this term – admittedly he did fly high in the Qipco 2000 Guineas in which he finished 11th – he hasn’t convinced yet that he has trained on so is probably best watched for the moment.

Dancing Star, a previous course and distance winner who also landed the prestigious 2016 Stewards Cup at Glorious Goodwood, was a neck behind Mythmaker at Haydock last month but didn’t show much spark back there a fortnight later. She is undoubtedly capable if recovering her old form but it’s a big ‘if, while Lady Dancealot is an honest sort but looks to be biting off more than she can chew in this company.
