Race Analysis Runners 10 Going Good to Firm Distance 1 mile (1600m)

Race Overview

First run in 2003, this one mile listed contest is open to fillies and mares aged four years old and upwards. As befits a contest at this level, it attracts horses that have tried their hand in Group races and those who have been running well in handicaps and are looking for some ‘black type’.

Of the trainers with runners in this year’s renewal, Hugo Palmer and David O’Meara are the only ones to have won this  £50,000 contest before, the latter having landed the prize 12 months ago with Lincoln Rocks.

Favourite Shenaningans

Trained by Newmarket-based Roger Varian (pictured), was second in two similar events earlier in the season before finishing a good third to Wilhamina last time in the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom last month. She’s likely to have her supporters as she eases back in grade here

Horse racing Oisin Murphy

Other Contenders

Promising Run, the mount of Oisin Murphy (pictured), is the highest rated horse in the field but has to give away weight all round. Clon Coulis has run respectably at this level in the past, as to has Paco’s Angel. Isabella and Pattie are both previous course and distance winners, while Stage Name remains unexposed.

Race Analysis

Saeed bin Suroor trains Godolphin’s Promising Run, winner of the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket in 2015. The five-year-old globetrotting mare has won three Group 2’s in Meydan in Dubai and a Group 3 in Turkey since then but hasn’t proved quite as effective in Britain, although she has run some decent races. Her sixth to Aljazzi at Royal Ascot last month in the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes was a fair effort after a break so she should go well, but may find the concession of 7lb far from easy.

SHENANIGANS is going the right way, and after winning twice in decent handicap company last season has finished runner-up in two listed events so far this campaign, going closest at Goodwood in the Conqueror Stakes where she was just outpointed by the tough Nyaleti. Her third behind Wilhamina last time in the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom was another step in the right direction and she is expected to be better suited by this stiff test and more conventional track.

Stage Name was seventh in that Epsom race, and was hampered late in the day when already held. It was by no means a bad effort though from a filly having only the third run of her career and she is clearly held in some regard. Her trainer, Hugo Palmer, who won this race in 2014 with Audacia so knows what is required to land the spoils. She should get closer to Shenanigans this time.

Clon Coulis, fourth in listed company in two of her last three starts, represents shrewd northern handler David Barron who will be very keen for her to finish in the first three so she can enhance her value as a broodmare. It is by no means out of the question as she only has about 3lb to find on the form book, but she steps up to a mile for the first time and her stamina has to be taken on trust.

Paco’s Angel only has around a length to find with Shenanigans on their Goodwood running but may find this tough mile stretching her to the limits, while course and distance winners Pattie and Isabella have plenty to find on official figures if they are to trouble the judge, a comment that applies even more to the in-form Marilyn who looks up against it at this level in her quest for a four-timer.
