Race Overview

While the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes is the standout event on Day Two of the Newmarket July Festival, it looks at the mercy of the tremendous Alpha Centauri who will be odds-on. From a betting point of view, this Group 2 juvenile fillies race really does look a cracker and sees a number of smart fillies who ran well at Royal Ascot in different races take each other on.

This £80,000 six furlong contest was renamed in 2013 having formerly been known as the Cherry Hinton Stakes, and has been won by some high-class fillies over the last two decades, including subsequent Group 1 and Classic winners Attraction, Gamilati, Roly Poly, and Arabian Queen.

Horse racing Mark Johnston

Favourite Main Edition

Mark Johnston’s unbeaten filly won the Group 3 Albany Stakes last time and had four of today’s rivals behind her that day. She is unpenalised for that success and looks sure to make a bold bid to take her career stats to 4-0 for the yard that won this race in 2003 with the tremendous subsequent 1000 Guineas heroine Attraction.

Other Contenders

La Pelosa, the mount of William Buick (pictured) was only a neck behind Main Edition in the Albany, while Angel’s Hideaway, Pretty Pollyanna and Chicas Amigas finished fourth, fifth and seventh respectively. Gossamer Wings failed very narrowly to land the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes in which Come On Leicester was a close fifth, and the unexposed Chaleur is open to an amount of improvement.

Race Analysis

There’s a really tremendous race in prospect here with most of the nine runners having some sort of a chance on the formbook. The Albany Stakes is the first pointer, as Mark Johnston’s MAIN EDITION came out on top in determined fashion, showing the talent and will to win that have proved unstoppable so far. She stuck to her guns tenaciously when challenged inside the distance and will be hard to pass once again with James Doyle on board.

La Pelosa lost out by just a neck to Main Edition, Charlie Appleby’s Dandy Man filly making the winner pull out all the stops but just couldn’t get by. Another battle royal is in prospect but there is no obvious reason why the runner-up should reverse the placings. Angel’s Hideaway was a further length behind in fourth, but John Gosden’s filly raced over on the far side while the principal action was down the centre of the track. If she is able to eyeball Main Edition and La Pelosa she may well get even closer this time.

Pretty Pollyanna and Chicas Amigas both had every chance in the Ascot race, finishing fifth and seventh respectively, but there appears less of an argument as to why they should turn the tables this time.

Aidan O’Brien has won the last two renewals of this fine race with Roly Poly and Clemmie, and his Gossamer Wings has strong claims having lost out by just a short-head to Signora Cabello in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes over five furlongs at the Royal meeting. She wasn’t stopping that day and may well be better with this extra furlong to tackle so has to be on the short-list given her trainer’s great recent record in the race.

Come On Leicester was away over on the far rail that day at Ascot and led home a posse on that part of the course without laying a glove on the principals. She was beaten at Windsor the following week when odds-on over the minimum trip but that may have come too soon. This extra furlong should help and she looks a lively outsider, along with Ralph Beckett’s Chaleur, who followed a debut three-length second to La Pelosa at Kempton by hacking up in a Leicester novice stakes last time.
