Race Analysis Runners 8 Going Good to Firm Distance 6 furlongs (1200m)

Race Overview

A quality six furlong two year old contest that may well give clues to the juvenile pecking order at present as well as offer pointers in the ante-post market as far ahead as next year’s Qipco 2000 Guineas back at HQ on the Rowley Mile.

This race is invariably own by a very useful colt, although few in recent decades have gone on to be a major force the following season.  £80,000 is up for grabs and the formlines from Royal Ascot and the Irish Derby meeting at the Curragh will be tested in this seven-runner contest.

Favourite Advertise

Martyn Meade’s talented youngster, the mount of Frankie Dettori, mayl just edge favouritism and will be a popular choice having run so well at Royal Ascot last month when finishing a brave runner-up to the exciting Calyx in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes

Former champion trainer John Gosden

Other Contenders

John Gosden’s Legends Of War created a good impression when winning on his racecourse bow, and Aidan O’Brien’s Van Beethoven has run consistently well at a high level this term. Konchek and Dunkeron look the most interesting of those at longer odds.

Race Analysis

Always a good race, this year’s renewal offers a potential three-cornered fight between Advertise, Legends of War, and Van Beethoven.

Advertise made a pleasing debut when winning his maiden over six furlongs at Newbury in May then really excelled when finding only the exciting Calyx too good for him in what looked a strong renewal of the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. The son of Showcasing ran on strongly on the far side to win the race in his group of 11 but couldn’t get to grips with the winner who raced on the stands side. He is currently a 20/1 shot in the ante-post market for next year’s 2000 Guineas and a win here would certainly enhance his prospects.

Legends Of War cost 900,000 at the Tattersalls Breeze Up Sales this spring and made the best possible start when really catching the eye with an authoritative win at Yarmouth on his racecourse debut, storming away to score by four lengths. It’s a big step up from that level to this Group 2, but top trainer John Gosden’ clearly feels this son of Scat Daddy is worth his place in the line-up and is up to taking on the likes of Advertise and the rest – which could be a tip in itself.

Despite farming so many of the top juvenile events, it comes as a surprise that Aidan O’Brien has only ever won this race once, when his Ivan Denisovich landed the spoils way back in 2005. That said, his Van Beethoven looks a genuine contender this time. Like Legends Of War he is by Scat Daddy but has much more experience than most of his rivals having already raced five times. He finished second to stable companion Fairyland in a listed contest at the Curragh, and at Royal Ascot last month he was doing all his best work at the finish over five furlong in the 28-runner listed Windsor Castle Stakes, finishing fourth. He then stayed on strongly to win the Group 2 GAIN Railway Stakes at the Curragh less than a fortnight ago, beating the decent Marie’s Diamond and will be a tough nut to crack.

Konchek, fifth in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes last time, is another who should relish the step up to six furlongs and is respected, while Dunkerron is on a hattrick after wins in novice company at Windsor and York but there could be more to come. Charming Kid, Sporting Chance, and North Wind look up against it on the evidence of their outings thus far.
