Favourite Pouvoir Magique

John Gosden’s Pouvoir Magique is on a hattrick after winning over course and distance last November then scoring on turf at Newbury on his seasonal return 17 days ago.

Other Contenders

Constantino, trained by Richard Fahey, is a decent handicapper who has won here before, as have Prost, Fayez and Oud Metha Bridge. Leader Writer, What’s The Story and old Knight Owl are also capable on their day.

Race Analysis

Just two weeks to go to Royal Ascot and amazingly there is no Flat racing on turf in Britain or Ireland! It should be worth waiting till late for this race though with the anticipated market leader POUVOIR MAGIQUE standing out as the one they all have to beat. John Gosden’s charge won here in November off a 9lb lower mark than today, then reappeared to beat useful handicappers over this trip at Newbury, in the process establishing himself as a serious contender for the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot on June 20 for which he is already among the market principals at around 14/1.

Owned by Princess Haya of Jordan (pictured below), this gelded son of Le Havre could well be up to competing in Group races very soon, so off a mark of 94 here he appears to have an outstanding chance. Anything less than a big effort would be very disappointing.

There are dangers, of course, including Richard Fahey’s Constantino, narrowly beaten last time at Chelmsford. He’s won here before and poses a threat to the selection if on the top of his game, and Scottish raider What’s The Story ran a good race in the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar last week over 10 furlongs, only fading a furlong from home. Dropping back in trip and running off the same mark, he should also be thereabouts.

Others to consider include Leader Writer, fancied by many for the Lincoln Handicap in which he finished eighth behind Addeybb. His latest run was too bad to be true and he has been dropped 2lb which gives him a sporting chance, while James Fanshawe’s veteran Knight Owl usually runs well on his seasonal return and is feasibly weighted.  Lord Of The Rock and Prost are others capable of getting into the argument if the breaks come their way.
