Race Analysis Runners 7 Going Good to Firm Distance 6 furlongs (1200m)

Race Overview

A real humdinger of a £25,000 handicap here with four of the seven runners having won last time out, while the other three all won on their penultimates outings. This event is open to filles aged three years or older rated 81-100, although the top weight here has an official mark of just 94.

Haydock is a very fair galloping track and there should be no excuses for anything in this seven-runner field. It wouldn’t surprise to see a few of the contenders go on to better things before the season is out.

Favourite Under The Covers

With her yard in good form, Under The Covers may just start favourite despite her 6lb penalty for a fine win at Goodwood last week, but that is by no means certain in a tightly knit contest. David Probert (pictured) takes the ride for Ron Harris.

Other Contenders

Magical Dreamer, trained by James Fanshawe (pictured) drops back into handicap company, Show Stealer has won two of her last three as has C&D winner Maid In India, Zip Along is on a hattrick and Queen’s Gift and Gorgeous Noora both won well last time out.

Race Analysis

Although she has won at this trip before, top weight Under The Covers looks at her best at five furlongs as she showed when bolting up at Glorious Goodwood last week. She carries her 6lb penalty and is respected, but this will be harder over an extra furlong. Hattrick seeker Zip Along is 2-2 this term and recovered from a slow start to comfortably justify favouritism at Nottingham last time out. She’s been raised 8lb for that which seems fair, and with former champion jockey Paul Hanagan on board seems sure to run another big race.

James Fanshawe’s yard looks about to really hit form. The Tin Man ran big in France on Sunday, and Spanish Archer did this column a favour on Tuesday at Nottingham. His MAGICAL DREAMER won six furlong handicaps at Goodwood and Newmarket in June before connections had a crack at a Group 3 at York which was a step too far at this stage. Back in handicap company off a mark just 3lb higher than her last win, this likeable Acclamation filly can regain the winning thread.

Following two wins on hard ground at Bath, Rae Guest’s Show Stealer wasn’t disgraced in a better race at Ascot over five furlongs and she has wining form over six in the past. She may be just a little too high in the handicap now, however. Gorgeous Noora made it 3-9 when scrambling home at Newmarket three weeks ago and is only 2lb higher so should be thereabouts, while Maid In India ran too bad to be true at York in June having looked progressive with two wins prior to that . She returns from a break and is worth a check for any market move.

The least exposed filly in the field is Michael Dods’ Queens Gift, who made her racecourse debut when winning a six furlong Ripon maiden as recently as June 20. She was then a creditable second at Beverly, before returning to winning ways last time at Newcastle beating the Roger Varian-trained favourite with a little in hand. This daughter of Canford Cliffs makes her handicap bow here off a mark of 80 and that could be generous, so she is certainly worthy of serious consideration.
