Race Analysis Runners 7 Going Standard to Slow - Polytrack Distance 1 mile (1600m)

Race Overview

A £12,000 mile handicap staged on the All Weather Polytrack surface at this Essex venue where the official going is Standard to Slow. The race is open to horses rated 71-90 and has attracted a field that includes one or two familiar names.

Not all have form on this surface, so there are a few variable to add into the equation when coming to a decision on the most likely winner of what is the best race in Britain on a day of mainly modest racing fayre.

Favourite Glory Awaits

It’s going to be very close for favouritism, but this will be the 50th race of a career that has seen this eight-year-old very nearly scale the highest heights – he was runner-up to Dawn Approach in the Qipco 2000 Guineas of 2013 – before plying his trade honestly around Britain ever since at a variety of levels. Jamie Spencer rides once again.

Other Contenders

Top weight Fastar wasn’t beaten far in a fair event at Newcastle last time and is respected, while The Warrior and previous course and distance winner Sir Hamilton, the mount of Andrea Atzeni, are also respected. The lightly raced and unexposed Cape Icon returns to the fray after a long absence and for a new handler.

Race Analysis

Glory Awaits, famously runner-up at odds of 150/1 under Jamie Spencer in the 2013 Qipco 2000 Guineas won by Dawn Approach, has seen it all in his long career but has only ever won four times as he prepares to run his 50th race. Rated 114 at his peak but now down to a mark of 82, David Simcock’s charge still runs to a fair level and won here over course and distance in March off a 2lb lower rating. He hasn’t run a bad race in five starts since but may still be just about in the grip of the handicapper.

Dennis Quinn is one of the lesser known Newmarket trainers and only has a handful of horses, but of the eight previous times he has booked Andrea Atzeni to ride, the pair have teamed up for three victories (38%). Quinn’s SIR HAMILTON is only a three-year-old and won here over course and distance in December on his second career start before following up at Kempton under a penalty. He’s been highly tried on turd thi term and even ran in the Group 3 Craven Stakes won by subsequent Derby hero Masar, but after a two-month break shaped well when fourth here in a slightly better race 10- days ago. He can land the spoils this time.

The Warrior has a poor 2-42 strike rate but has run well most starts on this surface and a bold display cannot be ruled out. He may well be the one most likley to chase the selection home. Top weight Fastar, winner of three from five on turf last summer, has run respectably in both starts this campaign but looked less effective earlier in his career on the All Weather. The fact they bring him here suggests connections believe he will give his running, but that’s a chance his supporters will have to take.

Black Bess won her penultimate start on the turf at Lingfield but has yet to show her best form on an artificial surface, while the lightly raced Cape Icon is arguably well handicapped on the best of his old form for Clive Cox, so despite an absence of 11 months should be monitored for any market support as he makes his debut for the very shrewd Olly Murphy.
