Race Analysis Runners 11 Going Good to Firm Distance 1 mile (1600m)

Race Overview

Quite a valuable race for the track and 61-80 grade with more than £20,000 in prize money on offer. This unique mile sees the runners hurtling steeply downhill for much of the race before eventually climbing back up to the finishing line.

It’s a track that some horses love, and others just hate, and the destiny of the winner’s trophy often changes hands a number of times in the closing stages as horses literally come to the end of their tether on the run to the winning post. Previous course form is well worth noting.

Favourite Optimum Time

Eve Johnson Houghton (pictured) sent out this three-year-old to bounce back to form at Windsor last time out. Although untried on this tricky track, he still looks feasibly handicapped off a 5lb higher mark and has a good chance under leading lady rider Josephine Gordon.

Racehorse trainer Gary Moore

Other Contenders

Pour La Victoire, Buzz Lightyere and Andalusite are all previous course and distance winners, last year’s winner Lord Clenaghcastle, trained by Gary Moore (pictured), won well at Sandown recently, while Zlatan, Enigmatic, Tigerwolf and Pendo have all gone close to landing the spoils in recent starts.

Race Analysis

They’re betting 5/1 the field so this really is a tough race to call, but we like a challenge here at Betting.Net!

Last year’s winner Lord Clenaghcastle won at Sandown last time out and is only 2lb higher here. This is his time of year and he will be a popular choice for his popular local handler, but runner-up in that race 12 months ago was the John Best-trained PENDO, who was beaten two lengths but gave the winner 7lb. The tables have well and truly turned this time with Pendo now 13lb better off.

Best’s charge arrives here for just his third run of the year having hinted he is in good shape when third over a mile on the AW track at Kempton eight weeks ago. He may have been saved for this race and looks one to have on your side at a decent price with the in-form David Egan taking the mount. The seven-year-old has run three times at this track and finished second on each occasion, so he looks a sporting each-way bet.

Horses running at Brighton races

Eve Johnson Houghton’s Optimum Time left behind a disappointing series of runs when popping up at 14/1 at Windsor last time, his second win at that track, indeed he hasn’t won anywhere else. This is a very different challenge though and he’ll do well to follow up, although he is undoubtedly well handicapped on the pick of his form last term. Buzz Lightyere won three times over course and distance last season off marks off 51, 55 and 60, but following another win at Ascot on his penultimate outing he now races off 68. Although the excellent Jason Watson claims 3lb, he’ll do well to score here again.

Zlatan has finished second on each of his last five starts and has gone up the weights despite his lack of success. He’s a talented but frustrating horse who has been running of late over 10 furlongs so this fast mile might be plenty sharp enough for him. Top weight Harry Beau won here over seven furlongs earlier this summer but is now 13lb higher and has never won at this trip, but veteran Pour La Victoire has won 6-18 here including at this trip, and has been a model of consistency this campaign. He is 8lb higher than his win here in April, but won off just a 4lb lower mark at Newmarket in June. He should again give a good account of himself.

Andalucite is another who loves the seaside air at Brighton. He is 3-9 at the track and went close at Chepstow last time so is in good nick and another bold bid cannot be ruled out. Tigerwold is a doubtful stayer and expect him to run out of puff inside the distance, but Enigmatic was running well at Yarmouth in June and returns now from an eight-week break and is another worth considering in a wide oipen and highly competitive event.
