Race Analysis Runners 9 Going Good to Firm Distance 1m2fur (2000m)

Race Overview

A typically competitive £11,355 guaranteed Beverley 1m2f handicap for horses rated 61-80, including a number who have already shown a particular liking for this track and its famously stiff uphill finish.

With three last-time-out winners in the mix as well this could turn into a lively betting heat at a track where certain jockeys excel due to the demanding nature of the course and a number of successful northern trainers have a good strike rate.

Favourite Zlatan

Jason Ward’s Zlatan missed out narrowly over course and distance last time and is in good form, but he’s finding it much harder to hit the target these days than his footballing namesake.

Horse racing Silvestre de Sousa

Other Contenders

It’s hard to rule out any of the other eight runners, but there will be good support for Music Seeker, Maifalki, and Auxiliary, all of whom scored last time. Jacbequick, course specialist Bollin Ted, and Silvestre de Sousa’s mount Detachment will also have their supporters.

Race Analysis

Bollin Ted won for the fourth time over course and distance four weeks ago off a 3lb lower mark and has finished a close third here in two subsequent starts in recent weeks. He should run well again but couldn’t get his head in front in Class 5 & 6 events so this Class 4 may stretch him even further.

Music Seeker landed a 10 furlong handicap at Wetherby last time with a bit to spare and has only been raised 4lb. He looks dangerous and has good apprentice Ger O’Neill claiming a valuable 5lb back. Maifalki won over the extended mile at Hamilton on easy ground off a 6lb lower mark and makes less appeal under these quicker conditions and with an inexperienced rider, while Auxiliary scrambled home at Hamilton in a 1m3f affair but he’s run poorly on his two previous visits to the Westwood and others are preferred.

Les Eyre, trainer of  DETACHMENT, has booked champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa (who has a 20% winning strike rate here, but a 38% win ratio for this handler) and this looks a very positive sign. He beat Jacbequick over course and distance in May (see below) and found his path blocked when travelling well here last time off a 1lb higher mark than today, eventually finishing fourth. Les Eyre’s horses are flying at present (3-7 in the last fortnight) so Detachment looks set to go well under a rider who excels at this venue.

Jacbequick has won here five times – four over the extended seven furlongs, and once over the extended mile – but he’s never had much luck at this trip despite going very close against the selection earlier this term and the handicapper has refused to relent. And Zlatan is another who missed out narrowly over course and distance last time and is in good form. He’s the forecast favoruite but has proved very costly to follow and may again find one or two too good for him.
