Race Overview

A £15,000 five furlong sprint handicap down the straight course at Ayr, open to horses rated between 71-92.

Favourite Marnie James

Iain Jardine’s in-form gelding bids for a quick hattrick afer impressive wins at Hamilton 12 days ago, and last week at Haydock. He has picked up a 6lb penalty so will have to be at his very best to complete the feat under the capable Jason Hart.

Horse racing - Jim Goldie

Other Contenders

Oriental Lilly, trained by Jim Goldie (pictured) will be popular choice as she too bids for a hattrick, after wining on the AW at Newcastle 10 days ago. Line Of Reason ran well at the Curragh last time and looks to be coming back to form, while Longroom scored last time at Ripon, and the likes of Carlton Frankie and Soldier’s Minute are not without a chance either.

Race Analysis

Marnie James is in great form and made it two in a row when storming home at Haydock last week. This is tougher though, and she has to carry her 6lb penalty meaning that in total she runs off an 8lb higher mark. Iain Jardine’s gelding is respected but may find one or two too good on these terms.

The other hattrick seeker is Oriental Lilly, trained by the amiable Jim Goldie. She won here over 6 furlongs a couple of weeks ago then followed up over the minimum trip at Newcastle, running on strongly to score by half a length. She is 4lb higher now but Jamie Gormley’s 3lb allowance more or less offsets the rise.

LINE OF REASON has mixed it with the best of them over the years but had been struggling through the first half of this campaign and duly fell 12lb in the ratings to his lowest mark for four years. He showed improved form though on his penultimate start when runner-up to Judicial at Beverley (see below), and the winner franked the form by landing a Group 3 at Sandown on Saturday. Paul Midgley’s gelding ran a blinder to be third of 17 in a hot handicap at the Curragh last time, and although back up 3lb for that looks dangerously well handicapped now he seems to be back in form. He should prove hard to beat.

Carlton Frankie, a winner at Redcar two starts ago over this distance, appeared to find the extra furlong beyond him last time but is not out of it back at his optimum trip, while Soldier’s Minute, beaten only four lengths in listed company last term by the smart Tip Two Win, has fallen down the weights this year despite running some decent races and is arguably well handicapped if things go his way. He represent last year’s winning yard of Keith Dalgleish.

Noel  Wilson’s Long Room won comfortably at Ripon recently and is a previous course and distance winner so won’t be far away off a 5lb higher mark, and in a tight handicap a bold show from the formerly decent Golden Steps, winner of the 2016 Bunbury Cup, is not out of the question as he has is another to have been given a chance now by the handicapper.
