Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid Betting Tips, Preview & Predictions

In a sentence: Atletico Madrid travel to El Madrigal with their heads held high after thumping Lokomotiv Moscow 5-1 in Russia on Thursday, and how that trip will affect their squad for a tough tie against Villarreal is one of the main questions in our La Liga preview as both sides are enjoying impressive seasons.

Last time: It was a surprisingly comfortable three-points for the Yellow Submarine the last time Atleti came to town. During their 2016 La Liga contest, two first-half goals coupled with a 93rd minute Roberto Soriano strike gave the hosts a 3-0 victory

This time: Villarreal are 16/5 with Atletico Madrid at 21/20 and the draw 21/10

You might remember: Who can forget that high octane 4-4 draw during a 2008 La Liga match? Razl Garcia equalised in the 85th minute to snatch a point for Atleti in a match that was described by Spanish press as ‘Madness’.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Diego Simeone has fashioned another hard-working Atletico Madrid side

Eight months into the season and both sides can be pleased with their efforts so far. Atletico are comfortably sat in the runners-up spot whilst Villarreal are holding on to a Europa League slot for next season in sixth. Over the years these two have provided much entertainment and today’s football prediction is for that to continue. With so much on the line, expect a fiery affair at the El Madrigal come Sunday.

Villarreal are 16/5 to win and based on head to heads, that is a price of value. The Yellow Submarine have won four of the last seven home ties between the two. Tiredness may also swing the balance of power in the home sides favour after a trip to Russia mid-week will have done little to help Atleti’s cause.

Atletico are 21/20 to win and one thing you can never do is write Simeone’s men off, especially considering they are on a run of just one defeat in their last 12 in all competitions. Backing Atletico at odds against could just be one of the best football betting tips of the weekend.

The draw is 21/20 and this would do neither side any harm. However, Villarreal have drawn just twice at home all season (the joint lowest in the league) and Atletico have drawn only three times away all season meaning one of the leading football predictions here is to stay away from the stalemate.

Under is 4/7 and that is one of the best La Liga predictions for this game.  Remarkably, only once in the last 10 meetings between the two has there been more than two goals, and nothing suggests that that will change in the football score predictions.

Atletico to keep a clean sheet is 5/4 and based on recent form, is one of the top football betting tips for the weekend. Simeone’s men have only conceded eight away goals all season which is only just bettered by Barcelona who have conceded just seven.

Predicted Score: Villarreal CF 0 - 1 Atlético Madrid

Match Summary

Look out for:

A red card. Although in more recent times, the pair have been a little better behaved, there is a history of sending offs between the two, with eight reds shown in just 10 games between 2005 and 2009. A red card in the second half is 16/5 and that looks like one of the better value football predictions.

We fancy:

A correct score of 0-1 to the Atletico at 5/1 is a smart way to go. Two out of the last five matches in Villarreal have resulted in that scoreline and once ahead, Atleti are likely to shut up shop for sterner tests ahead.

It’s a long shot, but:

Over 4.5 goals is 8/1 and although that may go against everything we have predicted, there is an outside chance it could pay-out.

This is because Atletico have managed five goals by themselves twice in the last six matches and although the home side are no fools, Atletico always remain a danger.
