Stoke City’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting acknowledges the fans after the final whistle

Both Stoke and Newcastle will be desperate for all three points when they meet at the Bet365 Stadium on New Year’s Day. Neither has impressed in the first half of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign, and both are in need of a win. Two of their last four Premier League meetings have finished level, but Newcastle won 2-1 when the pair met in the reverse match back in September.

Stoke are 27/20 to triumph as the Potters look to build on their 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion in their last home match on December 23. Mark Hughes’ team have won four, drawn two and lost four of their 10 home league fixtures this term, and have been victorious in two of their last three at the Bet365 Stadium. That said, West Ham United won 3-0 away to Stoke as recently as December 16.

Newcastle are 11/5 to win as they look to make it back-to-back Premier League away victories following a 3-2 success at West Ham on December 23. The Magpies have lost six of their 10 league games on the road this term, but showed plenty of fight against West Ham before Christmas. This is the type of match that head coach Rafael Benitez would have targeted as a potential three points.

The draw is 12/5 and it is worth noting that two of the last four Premier League meetings between the two teams have finished level. Newcastle ran out narrow winners when the pair met earlier this season, while this fixture only produced one goal last term. It could well be a tight and cagey affair at the Bet365 Stadium.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is 11/2 in the first goalscorer market as the Stoke forward looks to build on his impressive performance against West Brom. The summer arrival scored in his last match at the Bet365 Stadium, and can be backed at 23/10 to net at any point during the 90 minutes.

Joselu is 13/5 to find the back of the net at any point during the match, while the Newcastle forward is 16/1 to net two or more goals. The Spaniard has not exactly been full of goals this season, but might have some joy against a Stoke defence that has struggled during the 2017-18 campaign.

Match Summary

1

Look out for:

Newcastle to come from behind to win is available at 16/1, while Stoke can be backed at 12/1 under the same circumstances. There is value to be had due to the fact that neither team is full of confidence at the moment.

2

We fancy:

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to score first at 11/2 is good value. The Stoke forward has shown his quality during the 2017-18 campaign, and should be given an attacking position against Newcastle on New Year’s Day.

3

It’s a long shot, but:

Newcastle to win 3-0 is available at 45/1. Stoke have lost 3-0 in two of their last four Premier League matches on home soil, and have been very poor defensively this season. If Newcastle get it right, it could be a tough afternoon for the home side.
