In a sentence: Third placed Derby travel to Sheffield Wednesday looking to close the gap on the automatic promotion spots.

Last time: The reverse fixture saw a convincing Derby win. The game was somewhat changed in the fourth minute when Glenn Loovens saw red for giving away a penalty, which was dispatched by Matej Vydra. With Wednesday down to 10 men for 85 minutes, Derby were able to dominate possession, with substitute Bradley Johnson adding their second goal late on.

This time: Sheffield Wednesday are 13/5 to win, Derby 5/4 and a draw is 21/10.

You might remember: A five goal thriller between the two sides, back in 2015. Wednesday scored first, only for the sides to trade goal until the match was level at 2-2, before Darren Bent scored a penalty, winning the game for his side.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Sheffield Wednesday’s famous Hillsborough Stadium will host this game

Without a win in three matches, Sheffield Wednesday’s six-point cushion from the relegation zone suddenly doesn’t look so comforting. Hosting Derby, who haven’t lost in the league since November, is hardly likely to provide Jos Luhukay’s team much of a respite.

Sheffield Wednesday are 13/5 to win despite having failed to win in the league since Boxing Day. In spite of this, they have earned two impressive victories in the FA Cup, meaning that the sentiment around the club is far from negative. Having struggled with discipline this season, with the second most red cards, Luhukay must be urging his players to avoid giving away unnecessary penalties.

Derby are 5/4 to take three points, and risk being overtaken by Cardiff City if they fail to do so. The Rams are just one point off Aston Villa in second place, and if they can convert some draws into wins, will be feeling positive about their promotion hopes.

A draw is 21/10 and given the number of draws that both sides have had in recent weeks, would be far from a bad bet. Derby will be looking for the win, but if Wednesday are able to avoid making individual errors, they may be able to contain them.

Jordan Rhodes is 2/1 to score anytime this weekend, having notched four so far this season for Wednesday

Matej Vydra is 5/4 to break the deadlock, having scored against his weekend opponents in their last meeting and leading the Championship top scorer charts.

Match Summary

1

Look out for:

Red cards. Sheffield Wednesday have had seven players sent of this seaon, and have gone down to 10 men in 1/3 of their last six games against Derby.

Wednesday are 7/1 to lose a man.

2

We fancy:

Derby to win and Vydra to score at 9/4. The Rams are the in-form side going into the game, and, although Vydra wont be able to use his pace against a defensive set-up, he will still be a threat.

3

It’s a long shot, but:

Casey Palmer to score first at 9/1. If Vydra is pushed forward, Palmer may start in-place of Jerome, providing a more creative but less clinical aspect to Derby’s build up play.
