In a sentence: Champions League hopefuls Sevilla host Athletic Bilbao at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in La Liga on Saturday.

Last time: A goal from Mikel Vesga just before half time proved the difference when the teams met in mid-October, with Athletic holding on to claim a 1-0 victory at San Mames.

This time: Sevilla are 8/11 favourites for the win, while Athletic Bilbao are 5/1 and the draw is 3/1.

You might remember: Vicente Iborra scoring the only goal of the game in this fixture last season. He won’t be able to repeat that early strike at the weekend though, having moved to the Premier League to join Leicester City over the summer.

Sevilla take on Athletic Bilbao at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in this La Liga encounter

Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao come into this game after contrasting results in last weekend’s round of La Liga fixtures. Atletico Madrid inflicted an embarrassing defeat on Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, while Bilbao ended a run of six games without a win at home to Malaga. Both teams had positive results in their midweek matches though.

Sevilla are 7/10 to pick up a victory which is crucial if they want to keep their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League alive. They closed the gap to fourth placed Valencia to eight points by beating Malaga on Wednesday, but time’s running out for Montella’s side to secure another place in Europe’s premier club competition.

Athletic are 24/5 to take all three points back to the Basque Country, which would keep their own hopes of European football alive. Los Leones got past Spartak Moscow in the first knockout round of the Europa League last week, but they’re six points off making the competition for next season despite a decent draw at home to Valencia in midweek.

The draw is 3/1, but even though it’d be another respectable result for the visitors, a point wouldn’t do much for either side’s prospects. There hasn’t been a draw between these two in their last 10 meetings, but the last stalemate just over four years ago ended 1-1 and a repeat of that scoreline is priced at 13/2.

Sevilla forwards Luis Muriel and Wissam Ben Yedder are the joint 5/1 favourites to open the scoring on Saturday, while Sandro Ramirez is 9/4 to hit the back of the net anytime and register his first goal since joining on loan from Everton.

37-year-old striker Aritz Aduriz is Athletic’s top scorer in La Liga with eight goals so far this term. He’s likely to be central to any hopes the away side have, and is priced at 17/2 to break the deadlock or 6/1 to score in a Bilbao win.

Match Summary

Look out for:

Home comforts. 11 of the last 12 games between these two in La Liga have ended in a home victory. The last away win was 13 games ago when Athletic won 2-1 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and a repeat of that is 31/2 in the betting.

We fancy:

Sevilla to win and both teams to score at 11/4. Despite currently sitting in fifth position in the table, only five teams have conceded more goals than Los Rojiblancos, so the visitors will fancy their chances of getting on the scoresheet.

It’s a long shot, but:

Oscar de Marcos notched his first goal of the season when he equalised against Valencia on Wednesday, and the defender is 14/1 to go one better at the weekend by scoring in an Athletic win.
