In a sentence: Austrian league leaders Red Bull Salzburg welcome Real Sociedad to the Red Bull Arena on Thursday night, with their Europa League last 32 tie poised at 2-2 from the first leg.

Last time: A last minute goal from Takumi Minamino last week secured a draw for Salzburg in northern Spain.

This time: Salzburg are unbeaten at home in 2017-18, and they are 6/5 to win on Thursday, and Real Sociedad are 21/10 to win and progress.

You might remember: The furthest Sociedad have been in European was a European Cup semi final loss  Hamburg in 1983, who went on to win their first European title.

Betting Tips & Predictions

A vocal away support could help Real Sociedad overturn their first leg disappointment

The late equaliser will have dented Sociedad’s confidence ahead of the second leg, and Salzburg will be hoping of having an edge for the second leg.

The Spanish side recovered from that setback to pick up a 3-0 home win in La Liga at the weekend against Levante, and despite not having the greatest season in Spain, currently down in 12th place, they will be the favourites to win this one.

Salzburg’s record at home indicates that they will make it hard for Real Sociedad, but with the attacking options available to the Basque club they shouold have enough to win it – priced at 21/10.

The goal threat of William Jose and Juanmi, with 23 goals between them this season, will be decisive and Salzburg are not facing opposition of this standard on a regular basis.

Socieadad have had issues in defence this season, not helped by the January exit of Inigo Martinez, but in attack they have excelled – scoring 15 goals in their last five games in all competitions.

With that in mind, an over 2.5 goals bet looks to be a good shout, at 8/13.

Match Summary

Look out for:

Powerful striker William Jose has been the leading light for Sociedad this season, leading to transfer rumours over a move away from the club.

The former Real Madrid youth player has missed the last two games through injury, including the first leg last week, but he has four goals in four games prior to that.

He is set to play a central role on Thursday night, and he is 5/1 to add to his goal tally for the season, and score first.

We fancy:

Real Sociedad just look to have a little bit too much attacking potential for Salzburg, who performed well in the first leg, but the sense is that the Spanish side will want to get back to business.

Their form in La Liga warrants a higher league standing than they currently have, but a successful  Europa League campaign is needed if they want to have European football at the Anoeta next season.

Do not expect fireworks in this game, Sociedad will just look to do a professional job, and a 2-1 away win is priced at 9/1.

It’s a long shot, but:

If Salzburg are to get a positive result from this game they are likely to rely on top scorer Munas Dabour, much in the same way as Sociedad will be looking to William Jose.

However the Israeli striker has only scored three goals in the Europa League this season, with two goals in his last four domestic appearances.

He is 5/1 to shake that run and score twice on Thursday, and with it likely having a huge impact on the result.
