In a sentence: Porto face Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday, with the Portugese side looking to build on three consecutive wins.

Last time: The two sides haven’t clashed in over a decade, with their last meeting coming in the Champions League back in 2007. Liverpool won convincingly, thanks to a brace from Fernando Torres, and goals from Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch, with Lisandro Lopez pulling one back in the first half for Porto.

This time: Porto are 2/1 to win, Liverpool 5/4 and a draw 5/2.

You might remember: The appearances by Raul Meireles in the 2007 games, who was signed by Liverpool three years later.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Mohamed Salah has been in exceptional form throughout his first season at Liverpool

Porto will be full of confidence going into Wednesday’s fixture, leading the Primeira Liga, and with a comprehensive victory in their last match. The Liverpool side they face however, is in similarly strong form, and will push the Portugese league leaders all the way.

Porto are 2/1 to win, and any fears they may have had regarding Aboubakar’s injury would have been reassured following the performance of Tiquinho Soares in their last game. The back-up forward scored twice, and with Liverpool’s defence their greatest weakness, will be expected to do the same come Wedensday.

Liverpool are 5/4 to win, and ended the group stages in phenomincal form. A goal difference of 12 showed their attacking superiority, and after a brief blip, they seem to have regained their momentum.

A draw is 5/2, which given both sides’ attacking tendencies seems unlikely, if a draw does come about, expect it to be high scoring.

Moussa Marega is 2/1 to score anytime and is leading Porto’s goalscoring charts with 16 league strikes to his name this season. If anyone is to break through Liverpool’s back line, he is the one to do it.

Mohammed Salah is 13/10 to score against Porto and is averaging a goal or assist per game in the Champions League, and is not far off that domestically either. The pacey winger will cause havoc down Porto’s right flank, with their 4-4-2 formation ill-equipped to handle his attacking play.

Match Summary

Look out for:

Goals. Both sides have been free-scoring domestically this season, and will both look to play to their strengths in the Champions League. Over 3.5 goals scored is 7/4.

We fancy:

Liverpool to win 2-1 at 8/1. Both teams will push forward and it will likely be a case of who can score the most. Games like this tend to be unpredictable but Liverpool have more experience playing high quality teams this season so should have the edge.

It’s a long shot, but:

Salah to score a hat trick at 40/1. He is Liverpool’s main attacking threat and is in great form.
