In a sentence: Two teams in desperate need of Premier League points will meet at St James’ Park this weekend as Newcastle United host Southampton.

Newcastle lost five in a row at home in late 2017 but haven’t been beaten at St James’ Park in 2018

Southampton will be looking to stretch their unbeaten run against Newcastle United to eight matches when they visit St James’ Park this weekend. Incredibly, Southampton have not lost a single game against the Magpies since February 2013 – when they suffered a 4-2 defeat at St James’ Park. The Saints ran out 2-1 winners at Newcastle in January 2015, but the points were shared in a 2-2 draw when they last clashed at the home of the Magpies in August 2015. Just one point and one position currently separates these two struggling teams in the Premier League table.

Newcastle are 9/5 to collect all three points as the Magpies go in search of just their fifth home Premier League win of the campaign. Rafael Benitez’s side have dropped points in 10 of their 14 home league fixtures this term, and will enter the match off the back of a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon. Just two points currently separates 16th-placed Newcastle from 18th-placed Crystal Palace, and there is no downplaying the importance of this match as the business end of the campaign draws closer.

Southampton are available at 15/8 as the Saints look to pick up what would be a huge three points. Mauricio Pellegrino’s team, who are 17th in the table, have only been victorious in two of their 13 away Premier League matches this season – scoring just 13 times in the process. They were held by Stoke City at St Mary’s last time out, but are actually on a six-game unbeaten run away from home in all competitions, which included a goalless draw at Manchester United in the latter stages of 2017.

The draw is 9/4, and it is worth noting that Southampton have already drawn six away Premier League matches this season, while Newcastle have shared the points on four occasions in the league at St James’ Park. A draw would not really be much use to either side at this stage of the campaign, but the fact that both managers will be desperate not to lose could create a tense affair. Two of the last three Premier League meetings between these two clubs have also finished level.

Dwight Gayle is 11/2 in the first goalscorer market, while the Newcastle forward can be backed at 11/1 to score two or more goals during the 90 minutes. Gayle did not have much luck against Liverpool last weekend, but he scored twice away at Bournemouth earlier this month. The 27-year-old’s poaching abilities should see him continue at the tip of the Newcastle attack this weekend.

Manolo Gabbiadini is available at 31/5 in the first goalscorer market, while the Italian can be backed at 5/2 to register at any point during the 90 minutes. Gabbiadini has found himself on the Southampton bench in recent weeks, but the striker rescued a point at Burnley in his team’s last away match, and is pushing for a spot ahead of, or indeed alongside, Guido Carrillo.

Match Summary

Look out for:

There have been at least four goals scored in five of the last six Premier League meetings between the two teams. Over 4.5 goals in this particular match can be backed at 19/2, while there is a long shot of over 5.5 goals at 25/1.

We fancy:

Newcastle to win with both teams on the scoresheet is available at 5/1. The Magpies are unbeaten at home in all competitions since the end of 2017, and we fancy Benitez’s side to triumph this weekend.

It’s a long shot, but:

Southampton won 3-2 at another fellow struggler West Bromwich Albion last month, and a 3-2 Saints victory in this match can be backed as high as 45/1.
