Newcastle United vs Manchester City Betting Tips, Preview & Predictions

In a sentence: As Newcastle’s season shows few signs of being anything other than a relegation battle, there’s no worse team for this festive fixture as Manchester City come to town.

Last time: After Sergio Aguero opened the scoring for City early on, Newcastle’s Vurnon Anita scored the equaliser for Rafa Benitez’s side when the teams last played each other in the season before last. Although it was part of a season-ending run of six without defeat, it wasn’t enough to save the Magpies from relegation to the Championship.

This time: Newcastle are 14/1 for the win, while Manchester City are 2/7 and the draw is 6/1.

You might remember: Aguero bagging five in a 6-1 City victory just over two years ago. Less than eight months previously the Blues had trounced Newcastle 5-0, with David Silva scoring a brace that day.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero celebrates scoring his side’s fourth goal of the game during the Premier League match at the Liberty Stadium, Swansea.

With Mike Ashely desperate to sell up at St James’ his case for the price he wants will hardly be helped by a mauling at the hands of the Premier League’s runaway leaders. It’s hard to see anything other than a comfortable win for Manchester City in this game though, with the league leaders in devastating form.

Newcastle are as long as 14/1 for the win, which is a quite remarkable price for a team at home. However, it’s a sign of how much the Magpies have been struggling of late, and the strength of the visitors. Benitez will have to get his troops compact and organised, and keep City at bay for as long as they can. They’re in dire need of goals, with joint top scorers Joselu and Dwight Gayle just one ahead of defenders Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark.

Manchester City are 2/7 to take all three points back to the North West, so you’ll have to be creative with your bets to find some value in the away win. With Newcastle averaging less than a goal a game this season and no one having conceded fewer than the Blues, a City win to nil looks good at 11/10.

The draw is 6/1, but even at that price it doesn’t look too tempting. City appear invincible at the moment, although if the home faithful can generate a hostile atmosphere under the floodlights and in front of the TV cameras, they could just spring a massive surprise. It’s doubtful that Newcastle will keep City’s attack at bay all game, making a 1-1 draw at 13/1 look like the best value.

Gayle is 16/5 to score anytime, after bagging half of Newcastle’s last six goals prior to their trip to West Ham. The striker netted the first goal of the game against Manchester United and Chelsea this season, and he’s 10/1 to repeat the trick against City.

Aguero is the 13/5 favourite to open the scoring, and 6/10 to score anytime. He’s been managing a problem with build-up of fluid in his heel over recent months, but has 11 goals against Newcastle in his City career. The Argentine is 7/2 to score two or more, and 17/1 for a hat-trick.

Predicted Score: Newcastle United 0 - 4 Manchester City

3

It’s a long shot, but:

A 2-2 draw at 25/1. Maybe there’ll be something in the holiday air on Wednesday night, as Newcastle bring some much-needed festive cheer for the home crowd. Tag Gayle on as the first scorer and the odds increase to 110/1.
