Betting Tips & Predictions

The Den will host this Championship game between Millwall and bottom club Sunderland

Millwall start as favourites for the game at 4/5 and will be looking to extend their recent impressive league form. They are eight games without a defeat in the Championship and have won five of those matches in the process. They sit in 12th place just six points outside the play-off positions, and should they continue their recent good form, they could yet make it.

Their opponents this weekend, Sunderland, sit rock bottom in 24th position and look set to be relegated for the second consecutive season down into League One. They are without a victory in six games and have won just two of their last 10 league games. At 9/2 they are clear underdogs for the game but have to pick up a win soon if they are to have any chance of digging themselves out of the hole they have made for themselves.

Sunderland’s ability to score has not been the main issue as they have scored more than 14th placed Norwich City. It is their defensive record that has seen them struggle so much – they have conceded 61 goals this season, the joint worst across all four leagues in England. Three of Sunderland’s last four away games have seen over 3.5 goals and with their inability to defend, 3/1 for over 3.5 goals looks like good value.

Millwall have won three of their last five games to nil and that to be repeated here can be found at 7/4, which could be a way to go. However, Sunderland do find the net more often than not. They have scored in three of their last four away games and have drawn their last two away games at Bristol City and Middlesbrough 3-3, so they are more than capable of causing Millwall problems.

With that in mind, Millwall win and both teams to score at 10/3 looks the best way to go in this game. The Lions should be able to breach the joint worst defence in the top four English leagues but could find it difficult to keep Sunderland out also. Goals seem to be the most profitable way to go in this one.

Match Summary

Look out for:

Over 3.5 goals at 3/1. Sunderland may be extremely poor defensively, but they do score goals. Millwall themselves will be very confident of breaching their oppositions defence at least a few times. Over 3.5 has resulted in three of Sunderland’s last four away games.

We fancy:

Millwall to win and both teams to score at 10/3. Both sides will fancy their chances of scoring but Millwall should have too much for a Sunderland side who just cannot seem to win.

It’s a long shot, but:

Millwall to win and over 4.5 goals at 11/1. With Sunderland’s defensive record Millwall could really overpower their opponents at the weekend.
