Man United vs Southampton Betting Tips, Preview & Predictions
In a sentence: The live Saturday night match as the curtain comes down on Premier League football in 2017. Don’t expect to be too entertained though.
Last time: A routine 2-0 win for Manchester United way back in August 2016. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored both goals, including one from the penalty spot. United have triumphed in meetings at Wembley and St. Marys since then too.
This time: Manchester United are 7/17 to win with Southampton at 9/1 and the draw 21/5.
You might remember: Southampton claiming a rare win at Old Trafford in January 2016. Charlie Austin’s goal three minutes from time clinched a memorable victory for the visitors.
Manchester United's Last Six:
Manchester United’s last six: Won: 3 Drawn: 2 Lost: 1
Anthony Martial is the latest United player to pick up a knock, and Jose Mourinho is without a lot of other first team players at present. The likes of Smalling, Valencia, Fellaini and Bailly are all out too.
Southampton's Last Six:
Southampton’s last six: Won: 0 Drawn: 3 Lost: 3
Charlie Austin is suspended, and will be a huge miss for Southampton. At the back, both Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand are injured, and Virgil van Dijk has not been featuring as transfer rumours continue to circulate.
This is unlikely to be a free-flowing game full of attacking quality. There has been just one goal across the last two meetings, and both managers are conservative in nature. An early United goal might just open the floodgates though.
Manchester United are 7/17 to win it and will certainly be looking to do so after drawing at home with Burnley last time out. Aside from that match and their recent defeat to Manchester City, United have won their other eight home league matches in 2017/18. It would be a surprise if they didn’t chalk up another victory here.
Southampton are 9/1 and that looks a fair price in light of their dreadful form at the moment. The Saints have won none of their last seven league matches, and have only taken all three points on the road once this season. United have only scored ten in their last six at home, so Southampton will hope to keep it tight and pinch a winning goal, just as they did in 2016.
The draw is 21/5 and Southampton would settle for that now. Only West Brom and Liverpool have drawn more matches than the Saints this season, and United have taken a point in their last two games. It’s hard to see a Southampton clean sheet, but if they can keep United out then a draw would be a likely outcome.
Romelu Lukaku is evens to score anytime and will fancy his chances of a goal here. The Belgian is known for filling his boots against struggling teams, and has scored six goals in his nine previous matches against the Saints. Lukaku is 3/1 to score first, and the 6/1 price for him to score two-or-more shouldn’t be ignored.
Shane Long is 9/2 to score anytime, and though he is on a dreadful run of failing to score, he will probably lead the line for Southampton so looks their most likely player to net. He’ll score again eventually, so why not against United at Old Trafford? Stranger things have happened.
Predicted Score: Manchester United 3 - 0 Southampton
Look out for:
No on both teams to score at 17/20. Since August 2015, United have featured in the fewest Premier League matches where both teams found the net. Southampton have only seen this three more times than the Red Devils too, so at least one team failing to score looks a certainty
Manchester United to win to nil at 24/19. Quite simply it’s very hard to see Southampton scoring as Charlie Austin is suspended, and the home side will surely have too much for the Saints’ injury ravaged back line.
It’s a long shot, but:
Southampton to win and both teams to score at 17/1. For this to come in the Saints will obviously need at least two goals, but they got two against Spurs last time out. United have also conceded twice in three of their last five games, so are certainly capable of letting in two goals.
