Manchester United vs Burnley Betting Tips, Preview & Predictions

In a sentence: After first hosting Tottenham, Burnley’s Christmas double-header is far from ideal, as the Clarets make the short trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Boxing Day.

Last time: First half goals from Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney handed United a 2-0 win at Turf Moor towards the end of April. The victory wasn’t enough to keep the Reds in the running for the top four, although they still qualified for this season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League.

This time: Manchester United are 2/9 for the win, while Burnley are 18/1 and the draw is 29/5.

You might remember: Robbie Blake smashing in a stunning volley to hand the Clarets victory against United in their second game back in the big time in 2009. It was the first time Burnley had beaten the Old Trafford club since September 1968, when United were reigning European champions and had George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law in their ranks.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic celebrates scoring his side’s first goal of the game during the Carabao Cup Quarter Final at Ashton Gate, Bristol.

There’s no getting away from the fact that Manchester United are huge favourites for this game, but Burnley have exceeded all expectations this season and pose a major threat to Jose Mourinho’s side. Burnley have already drawn away at Liverpool and Spurs this term, and picked up wins at Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park.

Manchester United are 2/9 to pick up the win though, which would be their third on the spin in the Premier League since the derby defeat. The Reds have fresh disappointment to get over after the League Cup disaster, so Mourinho will look for a positive reaction from his players over Christmas. Romelu Lukaku seems to have put his goalscoring troubles behind him, and he’ll be a big threat to a defence missing the impressive Tarkowski.

Burnley are 18/1, which despite United’s superb home form this season is a huge price considering the form Sean Dyche’s side are in. The Clarets boss will use his team’s previous success on the road to inspire his players, as they look to give their travelling supporters a Christmas to remember. If their defensive unit can provide the platform they usually do despite missing a big player, Burnley could record another great result at Old Trafford.

The draw is 29/5, and looks quite tempting after Burnley’s performances away from home this season. If you think the Clarets will put in a dogged display that results in a goalless draw, that’s 14/1 while the bookmakers have a 1-1 scoreline priced the same.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is 17/20 to get on the scoresheet, after bagging his first goal since undergoing knee surgery against Bristol on Wednesday night. The Clarets could prove hard to break down in this one, so the mercurial striker could be needed from the bench. He’s 10/2 to bag the last goal of the game, or 18/1 to score the only goal of the contest.

Chris Wood is 110/1 to score the only goal of the game, and he’s always a threat when things are tight. The New Zealand hitman is priced at 3/1 to score anytime, or 10/1 to shock Old Trafford by breaking the deadlock.

Predicted Score: Manchester United 1 - 0 Burnley

Match Summary

1

Look out for:

Unexpected goalscorers. Chris Smalling bagged a brace against the Clarets in 2015, accounting for a quarter of his Premier League goals for United, while Mame Biram Diouf netted his only goal for the Reds against Burnley. Victor Lindelof is 18/1 to score his first United goal, while Phil Bardsley is 25/1 to bag against his former club.

2

We fancy:

Unexpected goalscorers. Chris Smalling bagged a brace against the Clarets in 2015, accounting for a quarter of his Premier League goals for United, while Mame Biram Diouf netted his only goal for the Reds against Burnley. Victor Lindelof is 18/1 to score his first United goal, while Phil Bardsley is 25/1 to bag against his former club.

3

It’s a long shot, but:

Burnley to win by two goals at 80/1. This bet’s a big increase on a one goal winning margin for the Clarets, which is priced at 20/1. After their recent disappointments and with the title all but gone, Burnley could frustrate United and the 2-0 away win’s available at 125/1.
