In a sentence: Huddersfield go into this New Year’s Day fixture just a few points behind Leicester, which is a fantastic achievement considering it’s their debut Premier League campaign and the Foxes won the title just 18 months ago.

Last time: The teams shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw last time out. Laurent Depoitre opened the scoring just after half time, before Jamie Vardy equalised just a few minutes later from the penalty spot.

This time: Leicester are 7/10 for the win, while Huddersfield are 5/1 and the draw is 3/1.

You might remember: Leicester smashing Huddersfield for six in the Championship on New Year’s Day five years ago. Chris Wood and Anthony Knockaert both bagged braces, with Richie De Laet and Martyn Waghorn getting the other goals.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy

The hosts are looking to put their recent stutter behind them after the excellent start Puel made to life in charge of Leicester. Huddersfield meanwhile are pushing for an unlikely spot in the top half of the table, as they look to put as much distance between themselves and the relegation places as possible.

Leicester are 7/10 for the win and deserved favourites in this one. The recent 3-0 defeat at home against Crystal Palace was a blip rather than the norm for the Foxes in front of their own supporters. It was the only game the Foxes have lost at the King Power against a team below them in the table, and came on the back of victories over Tottenham and Burnley.

Huddersfield are 5/1 to pick up their third away win of the season. The Terriers scored seven goals in their other two victories on the road at Palace and Watford, so they’re not shy when it comes to opening up away from the John Smith’s Stadium. Wagner’s side are 14/1 to score over 2.5 goals, so this bet could be a tempter.

The draw is 3/1 and would be a third stalemate of the Christmas period for Huddersfield. After 1-1 draws against Southampton and Stoke, a repeat of this scoreline is priced at 7/1. The odds jump up to 20/1 for a 2-2 draw. If the Terriers are hungry and Leicester’s talented attackers have their shooting boots on, this could be another shout for an outside bet.

Jamie Vardy is the favourite to open the scoring at 16/5, while the England striker is 11/10 to score anytime. Riyad Mahrez has returned to goalscoring form in recent weeks and is available at 11/5 to find the net during the game. If you think the Algerian will be the first to bag, it’s 11/2.

Depoitre is 9/1 to open the scoring as he did in the first meeting between these two this season. The Belgian is 16/5 to score anytime, and 8/1 to find the net in a Huddersfield victory. Steve Mounie is the same price, while Tom Ince is 9/1 after opening his Terriers account on Boxing Day.

Match Summary

1

Look out for:

Terriers on a leash. Huddersfield failed to score in nine of their opening 20 matches this season, and are finding the net at a ratio of less than a goal a game. Leicester are 6/5 to keep a clean sheet, and 9/5 to win to nil.

2

We fancy:

Mahrez to score and Leicester to win at 5/2. Whether he’s playing for a move or simply rediscovering his mojo, the tricky forward has been impressive of late. If you think he’ll score the first in a 2-0 win for the Foxes, the odds are 28/1.

3

It’s a long shot, but:

Depoitre to score the only goal of the game at 66/1. Whether starting or coming off the bench, the Huddersfield striker will pose a threat to the home side’s defence if the game is tight.
