In a sentence: Can Swiss side Basel dent Manchester City’s Champions League hopes, or will Pep Guardiola’s side steamroll their way through yet another game?

Last time: Basel and City have never actually played each other in a competitive fixture, so this will be the first time these two have ever faced off.

This time: Basel are priced at 7/1 to win, a draw is at 4/1 and a City win is favourite at 4/11.

You might remember: Basel’s St Jakob-Park stadium was the scene of Liverpool’s loss to Sevilla in the Europa League final a few years ago.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero scored four against Leicester at the weekend, and he’ll be a major threat to Basel in this one

Manchester City are overwhelming favourites going into this game, given how rampant they’ve been in the Premier League and across the group stages. A 4-0 City win is priced at 14/1 which is quite low for such a high scoreline, but when the Blues are involved it’s almost to be expected.

As for Basel, their odds are considerably higher. A 1-0 win for the hosts is available at 20/1, and even a 0-0 is 14/1. If you’re going to put some money on this game, you’ll either have to take a serious punt on the hosts getting something from the fixture, or go for a high scoring City win.

Former Norwich striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel is 15/2 to score first in this game, while Albian Ajeti is 9/1 to open the scoring, the second likeliest to get on the scoresheet when it comes to the home team according to the odds. As for City, it’s fairly obvious who their favourite is to score first with Aguero at 3/1, but with the visitors set to dominate someone like Nicolas Otamendi could be worth a punt at 8/1 to score anytime.

Match Summary

1

Look out for:

A City rout. A 4-1 win for the Premier League champions-elect is 18/1, and with Otamendi to score first the odds are 400/1. It’s quite a punt, but all it takes is an early header from a set piece to get the ball rolling.

2

We fancy:

A routine win for City, with a 3-0 win priced at 8/1. If you think Raheem Sterling will get the scoring going the odds are 33/1, while the England forward is 20/1 to bag a hat-trick.

3

It’s a long shot, but:

Basel to win and Van Wolfswinkel to score first at 20/1. The striker scoring isn’t a long shot, but Basel winning definitely is, helping to give you these high odds.
