Stamford Bridge

In a sentence: It’s hard to see anything but a home win as Chelsea welcome Brighton to Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day.

Last time: The teams met in a friendly just over five years ago, when the Seagulls were managed by former Chelsea favourite Gus Poyet. The Blues were fresh from winning the Champions League, and fielded a full strength side that included the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, David Luiz and Eden Hazard, but fell to a 3-1 defeat.

This time: Chelsea are 2/9 for the win, while Brighton are 18/1 and the draw is 34/5.

You might remember: Northern Irish forward Kevin Wilson scoring the only goal of the game the last time the teams met before their friendly encounter. However, as it was in the old Division Two back in 1989, you might not.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard celebrates scoring his side’s first goal during the UEFA Champions League match at Stamford Bridge, London.

Brighton’s loss of form has seen the Seagulls plunge down towards the relegation zone, but this game is effectively a free hit for the south coast side. No one expects them to get a result at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea have won their last five Premier League games.

Chelsea are 2/9 to record another home win, and maintain their push for a top four spot. With a League Cup semi-final against Arsenal, FA Cup campaign and Champions League tie with Barcelona on the horizon, Conte needs to ensure his side pick up as many points as possible before the fixture list starts to take its toll on his squad.

Brighton are 18/1 to take all three points from this game, and as their only away wins this season have come against a then-struggling West Ham and a Swansea team in free-fall, the long odds are understandable. The Seagulls do have the eighth best defensive record in the Premier League though, so their best hope of success will be to keep things tight at the back and hope for a smash and grab.

The draw is 34/5 and perhaps a more realistic bet if you think there could be a shock on the cards in this game. Brighton have conceded 12 goals against the other top seven sides so far this season – albeit five of these coming in their game against Liverpool – and they’ll find it tough to keep Chelsea’s talented attackers out for the full 90 minutes. As the Seagulls average less than a goal a game, 1-1 would be the most likely scoreline if the game ends with honours even, priced at 14/1.

Morata is 7/10 to score anytime in this one and he’ll be raring to go after missing the previous game through suspension. Bearing this in mind, he could be a good bet to score the first goal of the game at 13/5, and reach double figures in the Premier League in the process.

Glenn Murray is 11/1 to break the deadlock and the English striker will be key to any Brighton joy in this one. He’s scored five of Brighton’s last eight goals ahead of their game against Watford, and is available at 4/1 to score anytime.

Match Summary

Look out for:

Eden Hazard. The talented forward is one of the best players in the Premier League on his day, and he’s been in superb form of late. The Belgian’s 16/5 to open the scoring, 19/20 to bag anytime and 33/1 to score a hat-trick.

We fancy:

Chelsea to win to nil at 3/4. Improve your odds on the home win by predicting that the Blues will keep a clean sheet on their way to victory. Only West Brom and Swansea have scored fewer goals than Brighton so far this season, so this bet looks pretty attractive.

It’s a long shot, but:

Murray to score the only goal of the game at 150/1. At those odds it’s an incredibly long shot, but it could be a great way to cover all those Christmas presents you splashed out on if the Seagulls can spring a massive surprise at the home of the champions.
