In a sentence: Neil Warnock’s Cardiff have a chance to move within a point of automatic promotion, when they host struggling Bolton in this midweek Championship fixture.

Last time: Cardiff’s deadline day signing Gary Madine opened the scoring for former club Bolton from the penalty spot with 15 minutes remaining when the teams met in December. Josh Vela added a second just before the end to secure the points for the Trotters.

This time: Cardiff are 4/7 for the win, while Bolton are 6/1 and the draw is 3/1.

You might remember: A 94th minute own goal from Peter Whittingham handing Cardiff a 2-1 win in this fixture the season before last, after Bolton had taken an early lead through Zach Clough. The Wanderers went on to finish the campaign bottom of the Championship and were relegated to League One.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Cardiff City’s Kenneth Zohore is the favourite to open the scoring against Bolton

This game in hand is a great opportunity for Cardiff to get themselves right back in the hunt for second place, and automatic promotion to the Premier League. Bolton meanwhile are just two points above the relegation zone, but the visitors can treat the match as something of a free hit with few expecting them to pull off the win.

Cardiff are 4/7 to secure a vital three points, and the Bluebirds supporters will fully expect to see their side claim the win. The travelling contingent were disappointed to see an early lead go to waste at Millwall on Friday night, but while Aston Villa won on Sunday, Derby dropped points at home against Norwich over the weekend.

Bolton are 6/1 outsiders to pick up what would be a massive victory. Adam le Fondre’s equaliser helped the Trotters to claim a point against promotion-chasing Fulham on Saturday, which lifted them above Birmingham and into 19th place. Selling Madine to Cardiff in January could prove costly for the Trotters, and the likes of Le Fondre and Sammy Ameobi need to replace his goals.

The draw is 3/1 and would be a much better result for the visitors. Phil Parkinson’s side face a few tricky away fixtures over the coming weeks, and remaining unbeaten over this run would be huge in their bid for survival. There hasn’t been a draw in the last six meetings between these two though, with the most recent stalemate coming back in April 2013.

Kenneth Zohore isn’t having as productive a season in front of goal as last term, but he’s the 4/1 favourite to open the scoring in this one. Le Fondre is priced at 10/1 to break the deadlock for Bolton, while Ameobi could be worth a punt for the first or last goal, both priced at 19/1.

Match Summary

1

Look out for:

Mad for Madine. Wanderers fans would be dismayed to see the man they sold on deadline day damage their survival chances. Madine is 9/2 to score first as he looks to open his Cardiff account, and 15/8 to bag anytime in a win for his new side against his former employers.

2

We fancy:

Cardiff to win and both teams to score at 14/5. Even though Bolton have lost their top scorer to the Bluebirds, the visitors will be confident after beating Warnock’s side less than two months ago. The home team are still favourites but Bolton could still have a say in this one.

3

It’s a long shot, but:

Madine to score first and Cardiff to win 2-1 at 25/1. It’d be a bittersweet moment for the former Trotter to net his first goal against his old team, but the forward will be doing everything he can to help his new club reach the Premier League.
