In a sentence: With four points separating these two struggling sides, this is a crucial game in the Championship relegation battle.

Last time: The teams played out an entertaining 3-3 draw at the Stadium of Light in October. A Lewis Grabban brace fired Sunderland into the lead after they fell behind, before goals from Gary Madine and Karl Henry put the visitors back in front. Paddy McNair rescued a point for the Black Cats with just over 10 minutes left.

This time: Bolton are 6/4 for the win, while Sunderland are 23/10 and the draw is also priced at 23/10.

You might remember: The last time the teams met in the top flight. It was another see-saw game between the two in April 2012, with Kevin Davies opening and rounding off the scoring for Bolton in a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light. Nicklas Bendtner and James McClean were the scorers for the hosts.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Bolton have lost their last two games, while Sunderland have a better record on the road this season

This one’s a real relegation six-pointer, with Bolton and Sunderland both scrapping to avoid the drop to League One. The Wanderers have the chance to move seven points clear of Tuesday’s visitors with a win, which would take another club out of the Black Cats’ clutches.

Bolton are 6/4 for the victory, which would be the perfect time to return to winning ways. The Whites are back at home after losing both of their last two games on the road 2-0, and they can’t afford another run like earlier in the season when they lost eight in a row. Just two points above the drop zone, Bolton need to beat the teams around them if they’re going to stay up.

Sunderland are 23/10 to claim a priceless three points, which would take them to within a single point of their hosts on Tuesday. The Black Cats have only won five games all season, which is the lowest in the Championship, but three of those have come away from home. Chris Coleman’s appointment hasn’t brought the results the Wearsiders expected, but a victory in this one would bring renewed hope.

The draw is 23/10, which shows just how evenly matched these two sides are. It’s a tough game to call, but with so much at stake there’s every chance both teams will set up not to concede. If that’s the case then a low-scoring draw of 0-0 or 1-1 could be worth a punt. Those scorelines are priced at 8/1 and 11/2 respectively.

Sammy Ameobi opened the scoring when the teams played each other at the end of October, and he’s 15/2 to do the same in this one. Adam le Fondre is the 6/1 favourite to break the deadlock for the hosts, while Aiden McGeady is an inviting 11/1 for the same bet. The Irishman is also 13/2 to score in a Sunderland win.

Match Summary

1

Look out for:

Second half action. There’s a lot riding on this game, so it could be a slow burner. There were four second half goals when the teams met earlier this term, and it’s 5/4 that the second period is the highest scoring once again.

2

We fancy:

Both teams to score at 19/20. Bolton will be desperate to avoid going three games without a goal, while Sunderland bagged three in their last away game. Add in the result being a draw and the odds on this increase to 4/1.

3

It’s a long shot, but:

A second 3-3 draw of the season between these two is priced at 90/1. Although it’s unlikely to happen again, this result could be worth a few quid as an outside bet at these odds.
