In a sentence: There are few more exciting matches than when first plays second. Can Atletico Madrid keep the title race alive?

Last time: 2016/17’s league fixture finished 1-1. As did a Copa del Rey meeting later that season, though that game ended 2-1 on red cards to Barcelona

This time: Barcelona are 3/4 to win with Atletico Madrid at 21/5 and the draw 14/5.

You might remember: A 1-1 draw for Atleti in the final match of 2013/14, which clinched their tenth La Liga crown. Diego Godin equalised Alexis Sanchez’ opener to write his name into club folklore.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Lionel Messi remains the best player in the world and could be decisive here

This was always going to be a big game, but after Barcelona surprisingly failed to beat Las Palmas on Thursday night, Atletico Madrid can close to within two points of the leaders with a win.

Barcelona are 3/4 to win, and have won 10 of their 12 home league games this season. They haven’t lost a single La Liga match in 2017/18, but they have drawn three of their last five. A win here would take Barca a massive step closer to clinching the league title.

Atletico Madrid can be backed at 21/5, and they are the form team in Spain having won their last six league matches. Atleti have won nine of their 13 matches on the road in total this season.

The draw is available at 14/5, and might be the best option. The visitors will look to keep the match as tight as they can in the hope of nicking a vital win. There are rarely many goals when these teams meet, and three of the last six games have ended 1-1.

Lionel Messi is 31/10 to open the scoring, or just evens to bag a goal during the match. The Argentine superstar is La Liga’s top scorer with 23 goals already in 2017/18. He has also scored 27 times against Atleti in his career, and he has only netted more against Sevilla.

Antoine Griezmann is 11/4 to score, or 15/2 to get the opener. That looks a great bet considering the white hot form the Frenchman is in. He has scored seven goals in his last two matches, and a total of 12 in his last 10 appearances.

Match Summary

Look out for:

A red card. Barcelona may be one of only three teams yet to have a man sent off in La Liga in 2017/18, but these two tend to have fiery encounters. In the last four meetings at Camp Nou, referees have brandished a total of six red cards.

We fancy:

Under 2.5 goals, at evens. Atleti have featured in the fewest La Liga matches with at least three goals since the start of last season, and they’re not suddenly going to play an expansive game away at Barcelona. Four of the last six meetings have had under 2.5 goals, and the last two at Camp Nou have both ended 1-1.

It’s a long shot, but:

Atletico Madrid to win 2-0, at 30/1. The visitors need to win to keep the title race interesting, and with Antoine Griezmann in such fine goal scoring form and Atleti conceding just seven away league goals in 2017/18, then this score line suddenly doesn’t seem that implausible.
