In a sentence:  The latter stages of the Europa League begin as Russian side Lokomotiv travel to Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano to face arguably one of the tournament favourites. Atleti coach Diego Simeone knows that the Europa League is his last chance of silverware this season and will expect to get through against the Russians.

Last time: The pair have only ever met once before in a group B Uefa Cup match in October 2007. The Spanish side travelled to Russia that time and came away with a very entertaining point in a 3-3 draw in which Lokomotiv finished bottom of the pile.

This time: Atletico Madrid are 2/7 with Lokomotiv Moscow at 10/1 and the draw 4/1

You might remember: As mentioned above, there has only ever been one prior meeting between the two rivals but at a 3-3 scoreline proved the entertainment factor the pair can bring when called upon.

The Europa League is Diego Simeone’s best chance of silverware this season

The pressure is beginning to mount in this seasons Europa League as the first leg of the round of sixteen begins. Atletico Madrid may enter the tie as heavy favourites but a trip to Moscow for the second leg will prove a tricky affair so Simeone will want to ensure they get the job done quickly.

Atletico Madrid are 2/7 to win the match and is less than surprising. The Spanish side are one of Euorpe’s elite sides and it is more akin for them to be competing in the latter stages of the Champions League as opposed to the Europa. However, a loss to Barcelona at the weekend aside, Atleti are a side on form and we expect few difficulties in getting past Lokomotiv.

Lokomotiv Moscow are 10/1 to win meaning it is something of an outside bet but possibly worth an outside punt. Lokomotiv simply do not possess the squad to challenge simeone’s band of internationals. With only two Russian titles to their name, there are other more prolific Russian clubs such as city rivals CSKA and travelling to Spain will be a step too far.

The draw is 4/1 and that offers the best match result value even if it may still be something of a long shot. However, Lokomotiv have drawn two of their last six games in all competitions and Atletico have drawn in four of their home La Liga games this season which is more than anyone in the top nine of Spain’s top flight this season.

Atletico to keep a clean sheet is 8/15 and that is almost a dead cert. The Spaniards have only conceded four goals in their last eight games boasting one of the tightest defences in Europe right now.

A goal before the 29 minute mark is 5/6 and that looks a good price, Atletico will want to get the job done in the first leg and can be quite quick out of the blocks when they want to be.

Match Summary

Look out for:

Atleti to settle the tie in the first leg. Simeone’s side will not fancy needing a win in Russia so expect the strongest side possible to put Lokomotiv to the sword.

The home side to win 3-0 is 6/1 and that could nicely wrap things up.

We fancy:

Atletico to win and prevent Lokomotiv from scoring is 8/11 and that looks that best possible price on an inevitable home win. They are just too strong at home and that will comfortably show.

It’s a long shot, but:

A repeat of that 3-3 draw is a whopping 150/1. Football is after all meant to be romantic and who knows? Both teams do know how to entertain!
