In a sentence: Championship high-fliers Aston Villa host rock bottom Burton Albion on February 3.

Last time: Villa ran out comfortable winners with first half strikes from Keinan Davis, Albert Adomah and Robert Snodgrass. On-loan Josh Onomah also netted in the 4-0 triumph.

This time: The home side are 2/5 to take the three points with Burton available at 8/1 and the draw at 16/5.

You might remember: Burton achieving promotion in the same campaign Villa were relegated to the second tier of English football. The two sides met for the first time on Boxing Day in 2016 with the hosts earning a 2-1 victory.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Villa Park will host this game as Aston Villa play Burton Albion

Promotion hopefuls Villa are predictably the favourites and this has been reflected in the 2/5 odds. Steve Bruce’s men are in stellar form and have taken maximum points from their last five league matches. In the same sequence, the West Midlands based outfit have kept four clean sheets and look well poised to return to the top flight automatically alongside runaway leaders Wolves.

Bruce is a Championship specialist and has a wealth of experience in his squad, not least Chelsea hero John Terry, who after a tricky start has formed a near impenetrable partnership with James Chester. The pair are just two of a dozen Villans in the squad to have featured in the Premier League and they should have far too much for the visitors on the day.

Beleaguered Burton have lost their last four games and are in desperate need of a positive result. Clough’s troops are 8/1 to shock Villa and could even leap out of the drop zone if results elsewhere go their way. Three points currently separate the bottom six squads and all is not lost for the Brewers. With a tussle against fellow strugglers Barnsley on the horizon, the outlook could appear a lot different over the coming weeks.

The draw is 16/5 and would be a surprising outcome. If Bent is able to net early on and Albion make it to the hour mark with their lead intact, confidence will grow, but Villa have such attacking depth a siege on the opposition’s goal is almost guaranteed.

Snodgrass is 5/1 in the first goalscorer market. The West Ham owned wideman has struck seven times this campaign, with the most recent effort a priceless decider away at Sheffield United. The Scot has really stepped up in recent weeks.

Lloyd Dyer is the leading marksman for Albion this term and is 12/1 to hit the net first. The 35-year-old will start from the flank and will look to trouble right-back Ahmed Elmohamady.

Match Summary

1

Look out for:

Grabban to open his account any time during the 90 minutes at 7/1. The hitman spent the first part of the season at lowly Sunderland and despite the lack of service, still managed to fire in 12 goals. This total is just three shy of the division’s top scorer Matej Vydra and with regular supply from the likes of Adomah and Jack Grealish, few should bet against Grabban not only leading the claret and blue club back to the Premier League, but ending the year with the most goals.

2

We fancy:

Third place Villa to register within the first 15 minutes at 15/2. Competition for places is high and Scott Hogan now has a fight on his hands to keep the lone striker’s jersey. The Englishman should make the lineup, with Grabban coming off the bench, and must make his opportunity count.

3

It’s a long shot, but:

Burton Albion to claim a morale boosting win and over 3.5 goals is 40/1. With Villa’s attacking strength, it’s likely the visitors will need to bag a few goals in order to claim the points.
