AEK Athens take on Dynamo Kyiv in the first leg of this Europa League knockout tie

Both AEK Athens and Dynamo Kyiv are battling it out to win their domestic leagues, but there’s a great opportunity to progress to the later stages of the Europa League. The two teams seem to be quite evenly matched, with the bookmakers favouring home advantage ahead of this first leg.

AEK Athens are 7/5 to take the lead in the tie after this game. They were unbeaten during the group stages despite having to negotiate two games with big-spending Italian giants AC Milan. They only won one of their six games though, which was a 2-1 success in Croatia against Rijeka in their opening fixture.

Dynamo Kyiv are 5/2 for the win, which would leave them in a fantastic position in this knockout tie. The Ukrainian outfit won four of their Group B games, with their only defeat coming in an away fixture against Albanian side Skenderbeu. Khatskevich’s side have played seven friendlies in the last few weeks, as they try to regain match fitness following the winter break.

The draw is 9/4 and could be a good option as the two teams feel each other out in this first leg. Neither side will want to give away the advantage, which could mean we’re in for a tight, low-scoring affair on Thursday. The goalless draw is priced at 7/1, while the bookmakers have a 1-1 scoreline down as the most likely result at 11/2.

Argentinian striker Sergio Araujo is on loan at AEK from La Liga side Las Palmas, and he’s the 27/5 favourite to open the scoring in this game. Former Premier League player Dieumerci Mbokani has eight goals in 15 league games for Kyiv so far this term, and he’s available at 7/1 to break the deadlock for the visitors.

Match Summary

1

Look out for:

A cagey contest. The first leg of a knockout tie can often be a war of attrition, and as this is the first time these two clubs have faced each other, this one is likely to follow suit. An under 1.5 goals bet is 9/5, while it’s 3/5 for under 2.5 goals.

2

We fancy:

The second half to be the highest scoring at 27/20. After the teams feel each other out in the first period, they may open up a little in the second half. If you think the first goal will come after 70 minutes, you can get odds of 16/1.

3

It’s a long shot, but:

Araujo to score the only goal of the game at 22/1. If this game is settled by the odd goal, then the AEK striker is as likely to get it as anyone else. Kyiv’s Mbokani is 40/1 for the same bet.
