Getting started with Kalshi 15-minute markets
If you’re quite new to prediction markets, this can all seem intimidating - especially the faster-moving crypto options. To take all that away, we’ll take you through a few of the more basic steps to ensure you don’t have any gaps in your knowledge.
Of course, you’ll have a decent knowledge of crypto in general, or else you wouldn’t be here, but buying or trading Kalshi event contracts might be a different matter entirely. In a nutshell, you are predicting whether the price of a cryptocurrency will rise or fall in the next 15-minute window.
You have two options here; up and down, and each has a percentage next to it, which also represents the price of buying one contract. This percentage is based on the general opinion on what will happen, and will fluctuate over the time window. As the price is based on a percentage, it will be between $0.01 and $0.99. For example, if the ‘up’ percentage is at 58%, each contract will cost you $0.58 to buy.
Conversely, a ‘down’ contract will cost you $0.42, as the percentage here will be 42%. If your prediction is correct at the end of the time window, every contract you have bought will be worth $1 minus commission - read our guide on Kalshi fees explained to make sure you know what to expect before starting.
Keep or trade during Kalshi 15-minute markets?
The other option is to watch the markets during the window and sell your contracts if the market moves in your favor. Imagine those $0.42 ‘down’ contracts you bought are now worth $0.75. Rather than waiting until the end of the 15-minute window, you can sell these for a profit of $0.33 minus commission. This is quite a common practice, although if you are going to take this approach, you’ll need to ensure any potential profit margins are large enough not to be swallowed up by commission.
Another reason to sell before the deadline is to mitigate a potential loss. With fast-moving markets like crypto, if you make an incorrect choice, you could end up with nothing. If you see your percentages heading downward and you want to get out while you can, selling could cut your losses. For example, if your $0.42 contracts are now worth just $0.28, and in your opinion, heading down further, you could sell for a $0.14 loss per contract, but it might be better than what you’d get if you did nothing, which could potentially be zero.

These are can be hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and annually.
This might also give you an insight into any trends you might not have picked up during your own research. You will also see markets on whether a coin will reach a certain price by a given deadline, or which date, typically Bitcoin, will reach either $100K or $150K.
