West Virginia has just gained another online sportsbook and casino site in the form of WynnBet. This is the online brand that is owned by the hugely popular Wynn Resorts and it went live last week in the Mountain State.
This means that anyone over the age of 21 within West Virginia can enjoy playing the brand’s selection of online slots, as well as video poker, keno and live dealer games of blackjack and roulette. The WynnBet sportsbook is also on hand to let customers bet on a large range of leagues and tournaments.
Other key features of the WynnBet product are its integration with the Wynn Rewards loyalty program. This lets customers pick up points through their gameplay that can be traded in for a variety of real-life perks and privileges at a Wynn Resorts location.
WynnBet has been allowed to operate in the Mountain State as a result of the permission granted by the West Virginia Lottery Commission.
The commission ensured that WynnBet was able to procure a license that enables it to legally operate in the state. WynnBet will have had to pay $250,000 for its initial application for a license that will be valid for five years, and it will have to deal with a 10% tax rate on its revenues.
The move into West Virginia marks the second new state that the brand has moved into in 2023. As a result, WynnBet’s online casino is now active in West Virginia, as well as New Jersey and Michigan.
This follows on from the brand successfully having activated its online sportsbook in 11 states that include the likes of New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Virginia, Indiana, Colorado and Arizona.
It comes at a pivotal time for WynnBet who recently announced its partnership with the GAN Sports technology brand earlier this year. This would use the technology to power its online sportsbook and help it attract more customers.
However, WynnBet faces tough competition as it bids to gain a foothold in the saturated WV sports betting scene. The brand will become the tenth active sportsbook in the state despite the Mountain State having a population of just 1.78 million.
It comes at a time where the sports betting handle in West Virginia has actually been falling. The figures from May 2024 showed that bets taken in WV during the month only totalled $351 million which is down 14% from the previous month. Despite this, the total sports betting revenues was actually up approximately $700,000.
Sports betting laws in West Virginia allow for anywhere up to 15 online sportsbooks to operate within the state. However, it’s unlikely that too many more will be joining the fray after WynnBet.
After all, major brands like FanDuel and DraftKings are already dominating revenues within the Mountain State. Still, with an impressive launch from WynnBet along with its use of some innovative sports betting software, it seems like the sports betting scene in West Virginia could get even more competitive.
