In the latest Real Madrid news, Zinedine Zidane has confirmed he is leaving the club just days after he led them to a third consecutive Champions League crown.
The Frenchman succeeded Rafael Benitez as manager at the Bernabeu in 2016 and he has masterminded their recent dominance on the continent, with Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool seeing him become the first manager to win Europe’s premier club competition three years in a row.
However, despite his European success, Zidane has come under pressure after only winning one La Liga title during his two-and-a-half years in charge, while star men such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale have cast doubt over their own futures over recent days.
Zidane told Real president Florentino Perez of his intentions to leave the club on Wednesday before making his decision public at a press conference on Thursday.
The 45-year-old conceded that his decision may come as a surprise to some, but he believes it is in the best interest of everyone concerned.
“I know it is a strange moment for everyone involved,” said Zidane. “But it had to be done for everybody.
“This team has to continue winning and need a change. After three years they need a new voice, a new way of saying things – possibly another way of working.”
Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, as well as Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, have emerged as some of the early frontrunners to succeed Zidane, with betway pricing Wenger at 7/4.
It does not appear Real have anyone immediately lined up to succeed Zidane, with Perez confirming that he wanted the former France international to remain in charge for the foreseeable future.
“It is a sad day for me and will be for the fans, the players and everyone at the club,” said Perez. “I wanted him to be next to me forever. But I know it is his final decision.
“I would have liked to convince him to stay on but I know what he is like.”
