In the latest Real Madrid news, Raphael Varane claims Real Madrid aren’t clear favourites to beat Liverpool and retain their Champions League crown on Saturday.
The Spanish giants could make history in Kiev over the weekend as they attempt to lift the Champions League for a third successive year.
Los Blancos, who are priced at 4/6 to win the Champions League outright with bet365, have struggled domestically this term, having finished third in La Liga but they showed no signs of slipping up in Europe.
Saturday’s outing could well prove to be their toughest of the competition so far as they go up against the highest scorers Liverpool.
The Reds have hit the back of the net 40 times on route to the final and many are predicting a high-scoring final.
Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah boast 10 goals each, while Senegal international Sadio has chipped in with nine.
Madrid have been no strangers to scoring too, notching 30 overall, as Cristiano Ronaldo tops the goalscoring charts with 15.
Varane admits that the defending champions will need to be well disciplined at the back to keep a potent Liverpool at bay in Ukraine.
“Liverpool are a team that play well together and their attacking trio work very well and have scored a lot of goals,” Varane said.
“We know it’s their strong point and they have quality players there, so we need to defend well and avoid leaving spaces. It’s really important to work as a unit and close any gaps, so concentration will be vital.”
Many believe that Real Madrid are favourites to claim a 13th European title, however, Varane insists that isn’t the case.
He added: “I don’t think we are favourites. No, not really. Liverpool are in the final for a reason. They are a good team and have done well to reach this stage. There are no favourites in a match like this and we know beating them will be very complicated.”
