Mauricio Pellegrino has warned his Southampton squad that they must stay focused on their main task, staying in the Premier League, despite being close to another Wembley appearance.

Saints made the League Cup final last season – losing to Manchester United – and are now just one win away from an FA Cup semi-final and another trip to the national stadium.

But at the same time, Southampton find themselves in the Premier League relegation zone and facing the real prospect of losing their top-flight status.

Saints are preparing for another big fixture this weekend, when they face Burnley at Turf Moor, looking for a third consecutive away win in all competitions.

After last Monday’s FA Cup fifth-round shock, Pellegrino’s men now face a trip to League One Wigan Athletic in the quarter-finals – offering the south-coast club a fantastic chance of progression.

Pellegrino admitted: “For sure it is an amazing challenge for us and an amazing opportunity. We know the different aspects, but we have to be fully focused on this game (against Burnley) and after we will see.”

Southampton will see Saturday’s game as a good opportunity to secure crucial points in the battle to avoid the drop. Although Burnley sit in seventh, they have the lowest points tally of any Premier League club in the last 10 games.

Saints though were dealt an injury blow this week, after Maya Yoshida was told he faces a month on the sidelines due to a knee problem.

But Pellegrino is expected to welcome Sofiane Boufal back to the squad, after he sat out their FA Cup victory at West Brom.
