In the latest Nigeria news, defender William Troost-Ekong has claimed his side are good enough to pull off one or two surprises at the 2018 World Cup.
The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group D for this summer’s tournament in Russia and they will take on Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.
Gernot Rohr’s men cruised through their qualifying group with ease as they overcame the likes of Zambia, Cameroon and Algeria.
They were expected to struggle during that group but Nigeria’s young and ambitious squad continue to improve.
They may have lost in the final of the Africa Nations Championship to Morocco but Troost-Ekong is confident his side will not be the whipping boys of Group D.
The Bursaspor man will be hoping to be part of the Nigeria defence in Russia and he is relishing the chance to impress on the international stage.
He told The Guardian: “It’s hard because we’ve got a really difficult group but I think we can surprise like we did in qualifying, as we were not the favourites to go through, with Cameroon and Algeria there.
“But we were unbeaten apart from the last game [awarded 3-0 to Algeria because of an ineligible player]. We have a new coach and a lot of young players coming through, so I think at the World Cup we can do the same.”
Nigeria take on DR Congo at Port Hardcourt’s Adokiye Amiesimake Stadium in a friendly on Monday before facing England and Czech Republic on June 2 and 6 respectively.
Argentina are the favourites to win Group D but the Super Eagles can be backed at 9/4 to qualify for the knockout rounds with Skybet.
