The 3-5 Chicago Bears head to Pittsburgh to face the 4-3 Steelers for the Week 9 edition of Monday Night Football. When the dust has settled we will officially be halfway through with the NFL season. Still, questions remain for these two teams. Is Big Ben past his prime and ready for retirement? Is Justin Fields an NFL caliber quarterback, or maybe it’s Matt Nagy who’s the problem?
We can’t answer those, but we can help with questions on betting the spread, points, and props like anytime touchdown scorer. The Bears started October winning their first two games, only to lose their last three both straight up, and against the spread. The Steelers are finally starting to get hot, and are coming into this matchup with a three game win streak, two of which they covered.
The Steelers are touchdown favorites to win this game, and while I’m almost certain they’ll win, I don’t like them to cover. For one, the Steelers are only averaging 18 points per game. Even in their last three wins that number only goes up to 21.6. Secondly, in their four wins, Pittsburgh only beat an opponent by more than seven points once, when they beat the Broncos by eight…
Although the Bears are struggling to adapt to life without NVP Mitch Trubisky, they’re finally starting to figure out how to leverage Justin Fields’ athleticism. The truth is, Justin Fields is not a good passer yet. The Bears rank 32nd in passing offense according to DVOA. Fields is 31st in completion percentage, 32nd in yards per attempt, interception rate, and passer rating. 33rd in TD rate, sack rate, and QBR.
However, the Bears know this now and have gone to run heavy offense, both with Fields and their running backs. The bad thing for them is the Steelers have a great run defense. Neither team will put up many points in this matchup, and the Steelers will win, but look for the Bears to keep it close and cover.
As previously mentioned, the Steelers averaged only 21 points in their last three wins. This tells you that it’s their defense, not offense, that is winning them those games. Chicago has yet to score 25 points in a game yet, and average just over 15 points per game. All of this points to the under hitting, and a relatively low scoring, and frankly boring Monday Night Football matchup.
TD scorers will likely be few and far between in this contest. Diontae Johnson has been has consistent as they come for Big Ben and the Steelers offense though. He has seen 13 targets in three of the last four games, and has garnered 70 plus yards in all but one. Ben trusts him, and you should trust him to get in the endzone.
For a slightly riskier but possibly more rewarding pick, go with Justin Fields to use his legs and run one in for (+390).
Fields has only gone over this number once this season and was against the Lions. Even then he only threw for 209 yards. I don’t see the rookie having a career day and torching the Steelers defense through the air. This looks like easy money to me.
