The Los Angeles Rams host the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game with a berth in Super Bowl LVI on the line. As always we’ll give you the best betting tips for this NFC West rivalry rematch, and if you plan on betting this game or the AFC Championship check out our football odds page. There you’ll be able to compare live odds across multiple sportsbooks all in one place.
Most sports betting sites have the Rams as 3.5 point home favorites for this game even though they have lost to the 49ers twice this year already. Most recently the 49ers won in Week 18 just to get into the playoffs. In that game, Los Angeles was up 17-0 in the second quarter, but the 49ers were still able to make a big comeback. It was almost a similar story for the Rams last week, as they were up 27-3 over Tom Brady and the Bucs before doing everything in their power to lose the game. They were able to hang on and win 30-27 in the last seconds of regulation and advance to the NFC title game.
The 49ers are coming off of an even bigger upset of their own as they took down the #1 seed Green Bay Packers 13-10 in the divisional round. In that game they didn’t score a single offensive touchdown, but did get one on special teams after a blocked punt. Their defense held Aaron Rodgers to only one touchdown all game, and their offense did just enough to push them through to this week. Can they lean on their defense and special teams again this week? And can quarterback Jimmy Garropolo play mistake free football and get back to the Super Bowl again?
I think they can, and I would take the 49ers not just to cover the 3.5 points, but to win outright. Here’s the main reason why. San Francisco and coach Kyle Shanahan have had their way with the Sean McVay led Rams over the past three seasons to the tune of a 6-0 record. We know San Francisco runs the ball exceptionally well. They did this twice now against LA. In their first meeting they ran the ball 44 times for 156 yards. They almost had twice as much time of possession as the Rams and will likely be able to do the same of Sunday.
I would strongly recommend taking the under for this divisional rivalry. When teams see each other for a third time in a season they know each other well and will be well prepared to slow down the other’s offense. If San Francisco wants to win this game, they know they can’t get into a shootout. They will try to slow the game down just like they did in their first matchup when they combined for 41 points. Take the under.
Touchdowns could be hard to come by in this game, but I think a smart bet with good returns in LA Rams tight end Tyler Higbee. Higbee has only scored five touchdowns on the season, however three of them came against the 49ers. Look for him to get his fourth against San Fran on Sunday and get +210 from the best football betting sites.
