Newcastle News: Benitez confirms contract talks

In the latest Newcastle United news, Magpies supporters will be happy after manager Rafael Benitez confirmed talks about his future at the club have started and will continue “next week”.

Benitez has done a fantastic job to put the north-east outfit on the verge of Premier League safety, and a point at home to West Brom on Saturday would guarantee their top-flight status for next season.

The Magpies, who came from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture at the Hawthorns back in November, have won their last four league matches at home while they are unbeaten in the last eight outings at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are 10/11 with bet365 to pick up all three points, the draw is priced at 5/2 whilst the Baggies, who will go down if they get anything less than a win on Tyneside, are the 15/4 outsiders.

Attention is already turning towards summer transfer business for Benitez but doubts still remain over his future at the club, with just over a year left on the Spaniard’s current contract.

Owner Mike Ashley’s reluctance to pump funds into buying new players has become a real issue for the former Real Madrid boss and many fans are hoping a takeover happens in time for the upcoming transfer window.

With vacancies at Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal recently opening up for next season, it is crucial Newcastle tie down Benitez and, on a positive note, he revealed talks over all aspects regarding the club have started.

“We’ve had conversations and we will have conversations next week,” Benitez said at a press conference. “My representatives are speaking with (managing director) Lee Charnley and that’s it, but I will not say anything else about that because I want to focus on football and the game.

“I’m telling you now because a lot of people want to know, but I will not talk too much about that because we will have another meeting and we will see what’s going on.”

Benitez is 25/1 with bet365 to become Arsenal’s next manager whilst former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, who is said to want a transfer kitty of £200million to take the job at the Emirates, is the 3/1 favourite.
