There were three undefeated teams in college basketball Mid January going into this past week, and all three teams found a loss. First ranked Baylor fell to #19 Texas Tech 65-62 on Tuesday. It looks like Gonzaga will go full circle and reclaim the number one spot they started the season with. #5 USC fell to an unranked and surprisingly sneaky-good Stanford squad 75-69. This was after their original game was postponed for COVID protocols. Lastly, the Colorado State Rams got obliterated 79-49 to the ten and three San Diego State Aztecs.
The upsets didn’t stop their. Before Texas Tech beat Baylor, they also upset then-ranked #6 Kansas 75-67. The Big 12 was filled with upsets as Oklahoma beat #15 Iowa State & Oklahoma State shocked #21 Texas. The Big 10 found Indiana handily taking down now-ranked #16 Ohio State 67-51. While the SEC saw seven and seven Missouri upset #24 Alabama, & then-ranked #21 LSU shake up #18 Tennessee.
One of the biggest surprises this past week is when #2 Duke dropped a close game to unranked Miami 76-74. Of course, a few teams that were supposed to win took care of business;#9 Kansas squeaks past #15 Iowa State 62-61, & #14 Villanova got past conference rivals #17 Xavier 64-60. The conference games are heating up as March slowly gets closer, before the big tournament get all the best basketball tips.
These two Big 10 teams will play basketball Mid January again. Earlier this year Ohio State got the victory 73-55 in Columbus, Ohio. This time they will play in Madison, Wisconsin and the Badgers are on a five game winning streak since that game, beating then-ranked #3 Purdue, Iowa, & Maryland. Watch Davis and Liddell matchup again, but take Wisconsin on spread and money line (-2.5/-145)
Purdue is coming off their second loss of the season (this time to a respectable Wisconsin team), and after skirting by an alright Penn State squad, they will have their next big rebound test with Illinois. Illinois is hoping to continue their five game winning streak (six games if they beat Michigan on Friday before this Monday matchup). Kofi Cockburn of Illinois is on fire shooting 60% at 22 points per game, while beasting over 12.5 rebounds per game. Take Illinois for another upset to Purdue.
Going into 2022 Iowa State was undefeated until they faced off against undefeated Baylor and earning their first loss in a close game. In January they are one for four with losses to #1 Baylor, #6 Kansas, & Oklahoma, and with a single win against Texas Tech (Texas Tech themselves upset Baylor and Kansas this past week). Texas on the other hand, was just upset by the other Oklahoma school (unranked Oklahoma State). Both of these teams find themselves at thirteen and three and are trying to rebound after embarrassing upsets. Take Texas on the rebound in both points and spread.
The SEC has been a disappointment this year (except for surprises Auburn and LSU). These are the third and fourth best SEC teams playing each other. Both of these teams have lost to good schools, but only Tennessee has beat good squads this year. Take the Volunteers with their better defense for the win.
14-3 BYU will be traveling to Spokane, Washington to face the new number two team in the league, Gonzaga. Gonzaga is on a five game winning streak (including beating the red hot #19 Texas Tech Red Raiders) since being upset by now-ranked #24 Alabama. BYU has impressively beat teams like Oregon, San Diego State, & St. Mary’s, but have interesting losses to Utah Valley State, Creighton, and Vanderbilt. BYU has a NET rating of #30, while Gonzaga at #5. This is essentially like a #8 vs. #1 matchup in the March Madness tournament. Gonzaga should win fine -1600, but BYU will cover the spread +13.5.
Basketball Mid January has been epic, but with the NFL playoffs starting this weekend, switch the focus to football and get the best odds for all of the games.
