Early January basketball has already been filled with upsets and close matchups between good teams. The biggest matchup of this past weekend was when #1 Baylor took down #8 Iowa State 77-72. Both these teams started the game undefeated, but now Iowa State is 12-1 and fell to number #11 in the AP Top 25 Poll. The other can’t miss matchup this past weekend was between SEC rivals, #21 LSU and #16 Kentucky. LSU continued their impressive season by winning 65-60.
Two other lesser ranked schools took down top teams. #24 Wisconsin beat #3 Purdue 74-69 in this Big 10 showdown. The polls have not reflected the changes, but expect Purdue to drop out of the top five with their second loss. #22 Villanova also upset #15 Seton Hall 73-67, with the Big East constantly changing leaders. Villanova also beat Creighton this week, and Marquette upset #16 Providence with a huge blowout 88-56. With conference games heating up, we are treated to playoff-style basketball in January. Iowa State is coming off a fresh loss to top-ranked Baylor, but have looked great against Texas Tech, Creighton, Iowa, & Xavier. This matchup will prove if the Cyclones are a top team or just a decent squad. Kansas has only lost to Dayton, but their wins are against teams that aren’t that good. Their best win was against Michigan State, but that was the first week of the season. This will actually be Kansas’ first game against a ranked team this season. Take the Cyclones led by Izaiah Brockington, in both the spread and money line.
These teams are currently tied for first place in the SEC. The battle for ‘Bama sees the 13-1 Tigers go up against the 11-3 Crimson Tide. Auburn still has to play Florida before the Alabama game, but currently only has one loss (to UCONN in double overtime). Auburn just won their first game against a ranked opponent last week, handing LSU their first loss. Alabama has been streaky, they’ve beaten now-ranked #4 Gonzaga, #12 Houston, and #18 Tennessee. However, all three of their losses have been against unranked opponents (Iona, Memphis, & Davidson). Now that Alabama is playing a ranked team, they should win. Take the home team in Alabama.
Tennessee is 1-4 against ranked schools. They’ve beaten #8 Arizona, but lost to #15 Alabama, #19 Villanova, & #25 Texas Tech. 13-1 LSU on the other hand, has only played two ranked teams (both last week). They fell to #9 Auburn, but beat #16 Kentucky. Keep riding the red hot LSU Tigers, who have more rebounds and steals and less points scored against per game compared to the Volunteers.
Texas Tech has gone 1-3 against ranked schools this year, including a win in overtime against #18 Tennessee, and losses to #16 Providence, #4 Gonzaga, & #11 Iowa State. They will be playing #6 Kansas (mentioned below) before this game. Despite the Red Raiders solid defense, Baylor should have no problem getting the win and covering the spread at home.
Both of these teams were mentioned previously, but watch these two of the Big 12’s five ranked teams play each other on Saturday. The game will be played in Lubbock, Texas, so don’t be too quick to take Kansas. The Jayhawks’ Ochai Agbaji has struggled recently (shooting 29% and 39% in the last two games). Texas Tech has the better defense. Take the Red Raiders’ to cover the spread, but Kansas should ultimately get the win.
