The regular season is coming to an end for NCAA Basketball. While it is March, March Madness won’t start for about two weeks. Most teams have one or two games left on their schedule. However, conference tournaments have already started for some of the smaller schools (like Northeast & Patriot conferences). The Big Ten conference tournament will be next week, but this is a must-win game for both Rutgers and Indiana. Get the best betting offers before the big conference tournaments and March Madness.
Selection Sunday is when the March Madness tournament will decide who will participate. This takes place March 13th. However, a lot can happen between now and then. Last year the committee accepted the conference champions, as well as the top 41 teams in NET rankings, and cherry-picked the remaining schools based on end of season momentum (and probably tv viewership). Teams who received votes for the AP Top 25 seem like pretty sure locks into the tournament, but there are a lot of teams on the bubble.
In the past few weeks, Towson has jumped up 28 spots in the NET rankings with a 5-0 record. Furthermore, that is the most growth out of any team. Towson will probably win their conference (Colonial Athletic Association). The Atlantic 10’s VCU (+25 spots) and St. Bonaventure (+27 spots) have both gone on undefeated runs as well (six and seven games respectively). VCU beat St. Bonaventure tonight. Furthermore, this helps VCU getting into March Madness. Other bubble teams that look likely in are: San Diego State, North Texas, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Memphis, SMU, Notre Dame, & Miami all barring major upsets. If St. John’s, Colorado, St. Bonaventure, or Northern Iowa have good conference tournaments they could make the final cut as well.
Losses to bad teams is the fastest way to sink a team on the brink. There still is a chance for teams like Washington State, UAB, Belmont, and Saint Louis, but they are not making it easy on themselves. The Biggest faller was Cincinnati, who has dropped 27 spots after going only 2-5 in the past few weeks. Wichita State has also been sliding past the point of no return along with Northwestern, Utah State, West Virginia, Florida State, and Stanford. Some of these teams may get lucky and win their conference tournaments (like sinking Chattanooga, Iona, & Liberty), but for the teams in big to mid-range conferences, it is hard to survive a late fall. A few weeks back, Rutgers was sitting as the 100th best team, but then the Scarlet Knights went on a run and beat four ranked teams in a row (Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, & Illinois). Rutgers was the talk of the town, but with three straight losses (Purdue, Michigan, & Wisconsin), they need to win their last two games to have a shot as a bubble team (Indiana & Penn State).
On the other side of the court, Indiana has been cold. They went on a five game losing streak before finally beating Maryland and Minnesota (two of the worst teams in the Big Ten). The Hoosiers will have to win against either Rutgers or Purdue to avoid being rejected from March Madness. Rutgers at Indiana will be the biggest game for these two teams. We all love Cinderella Stories, but save those for the tournament. Rutgers made an impressive late run, but they just don’t have the talent or conditioning to keep up their semi-amazing run. Indiana is led in points and rebounds by forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who makes a higher percentage of field-goals at home.
The Scarlet Knights top shooter, Ron Harper Jr., unfortunately shoots 1.4 fewer points, 1 fewer rebound, & only shoots 39% from the field when playing away. Indiana stopped their five game losing streak and have warmed up with the lesser Golden Gophers and Terrapins. Take the Hoosiers in points and spread against Rutgers.
