This weekend’s NBA action was highlighted by the Bulls big win on the road over the Nets, and the Warriors dropping a surprising game on the road to the Spurs. Although we are only a quarter of the way through the regular season, it looks like each conference has 4-5 teams that have the talent to make a run at an NBA title which is a nice change for NBA fans in cities across the country. Luka Doncic has the Mavs in the thick of the Western Conference standings
The Nets are still at the top of the Eastern Conference standings and favorites to win the NBA title, but they have struggled against the top teams in both the Eastern and Western Conference and they have another tough test on the road against the sharp-shooting Dallas Mavericks. Luka Doncic has been battling ankle soreness in recent weeks and he may have to sit out this game, but if he is able to play this will be one of the best games of the week to watch and we could see both teams putting up close to 120 points with some of the best three-point shooting in the league on display.
The Lakers and Celtics are one of the oldest rivalries in sports and bring back nostalgic memories of the late 80s battles between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson for most NBA fans. The Celtics have shown some life under new coach Ime Udoka and are only 3.5 games out of first place in the East. The Lakers look great one night than like a team that will miss the playoffs the next. Keep an eye out for the Lakers to shake up their roster with a big trade before the deadline as they need to get younger and shoot better from the outside if they want to compete with the Warriors or Suns in the West.

Embiid is back from Covid and the Sixers should move up in the Eastern standings
Joel Embiid finally returned from a lengthy absence due to Covid and the Sixers have looked like serious contenders when he is on the court. Early in the season, the Sixers got out to the best start in the East and then played below .500 basketball when Embiid was out for 2 weeks. The Sixers are currently 9th in the East but are only 4 games out of first and I suspect they will be on the top 4 seeds in the East when the season ends.
The Hornets are currently 6th in a crowded Eastern Conference but they play a style of basketball that should have staying power all season. Lamelo Ball and Terry Rozier like to push the pace and Miles Bridges both can score from the perimeter and average over 37 PPG combined. When you survey the teams in the East that are under the radar with the highest upside, the Hornets top the lists as Lamelo Ball looks like he could emerge into the games next big superstar as he is averaging 20 PPG, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists in his second NBA season.
Lamelo Ball could become the next big superstar in the NBA
In the East, the Nets are still the heavy favorites but their play against top teams is a real concern and without Kyrie Irving, you have to be concerned about their ability to beat teams with 3 superstars and deeper rosters from top to bottom. The Bucks seem like a great value at +300 as it’s tough to bet against Giannis and a roster that just climbed the top of the mountain. The Hornets at +6500 are not a bad idea of a high-risk high reward play.
The Warriors and Suns look head and shoulders above the rest of the conference but both teams are an injury away from opening the door to teams like the Jazz or Clippers.
