In the latest Mexico news, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa insists his side have a greater will to succeed at this World Cup after suffering heartbreak in previous years.
After winning their opening two World Cup fixtures, El Tri are on the verge of making the last-16 for a seventh successive tournament but have a point to prove, having fallen in the second round on the last six occasions.
The Mexicans, who are priced at 33/1 to win the 2018 World Cup outright with bet365, got off to an impressive start by claiming a shock 1-0 victory over reigning world champions Germany courtesy of a first-half strike from Hirving Lozano.
They showed incredible discipline to keep Die Mannschaft at bay for the remainder of the match, despite coming under extreme pressure in the second period.
Juan Carlos Osorio’s men backed up that success with a convincing 2-1 victory over South Korea on Saturday with Carlos Vela and Javier Hernandez providing the goals.
The Central Americans require just one point from their final group game with Sweden, who fell to a dramatic 2-1 defeat at the hands of Germany, to ensure they claim top spot in Group F.
Sweden were on the verge of taking points off Germany until Toni Kroos netted the winner in stoppage time and that would have subsequently secured Mexico’s passage to the last-16.
Ochoa claims they weren’t banking on the Swedes doing them a favour and insists they always expected to need further points from their concluding group game.
“We hadn’t done any sort of mathematical calculations,” Ochoa said. “We knew that we were going to pay for first place against Swede. This result wasn’t going to change anything.”
The Standard Liege custodian believes Mexico are capable of going all the way in Russia and feels they have an added motivation after their disappointment over the last 24 years.
He added: “My dream, along with that of my team-mates, is for us to stay here until the very last day. It’s something that I believe in, that I feel, that I’m imagining and that I’m wishing for and nobody here or anywhere else is going to keep me from dreaming in that.
“It’s worth dreaming when you’re in a tournament like this. Everyone wants to be there on the last day, but I think this national team wants it more than the others.”
