Jim McIngvale, also known as “Mattress Mack,” the Houston furniture entrepreneur who owns the Gallery Furniture chain of stores, has increased his bet on the Houston Astros to win the World Series to $4 million.
He placed equal wagers of $2 million with Unibet and Betfred in Iowa. In addition, he also wagered a total of $2 million at BetMGM in Vegas, where the odds were set at +500.
The wagers boosted his total wagers on Houston up to a total of $10 million. Last week, he wagered $2 million at +533 odds at Barstool in Louisiana.
He placed $3 million at Caesars at +1000 and $1 million at WynnBet at 12/1 earlier in the season.
Even though Mack has only ever won one of his $10 million bets on the Astros in 2017, he told the Action Network that this year will be different since he is ramping up his furniture advertising.
He promised his customers in May that if Houston win the World Series, they would get double their money back on furniture purchases over $3,000.
“We had to do the ‘double your money’ promotion because the furniture business is in the middle of a recession,” Mack said.
The promotion was well-received, and Mack now has to terminate it sooner than normal due to the increased liability it has created.
The Astros currently have a record of 62-32, which places them in second place in the American League behind the New York Yankees.
Outside of baseball, Mack’s most recent significant wager was $2,6 million on the Kentucky Derby. He wagered his money on the horse Epicenter as well as several exotic bets but didn’t win. The loss resulted in him losing a total of $18 million in publicly announced bets in 2022, including wagers on Alabama, the Patriots, the Titans, and the Bengals to win the championship.
Mack was able to get back on his feet by winning a total of $12,2 million by betting on Kansas to win the NCAA basketball tournament.
