In the latest Manchester United news, Romelu Lukaku says his side must move on quickly from Tuesday’s shock Champions League exit and do all they can to win the FA Cup.
United welcomed Sevilla to Old Trafford on Tuesday for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie and, with the game over in Spain ending 0-0, everything was to play for.
But despite being heavy favourites ahead of the clash, the Red Devils were undone by a second-half brace from substitute Wissam Ben Yedder with Lukaku’s late goal immaterial as the visitors won 2-1 on aggregate.
Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho is under huge pressure after the early European exit and, with the Premier League title out of reach, the FA Cup is now United’s only realistic chance of silverware this season.
United take on Brighton in the quarter-finals at the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday and Belgium international Lukaku, who has scored 23 goals in all competitions this season, says his side must put all their focus into lifting the trophy for the 13th time.
“It is difficult for us,” he told BT Sport. “But we have to bounce back. We have one trophy to chase and that is the FA Cup. We wanted to go far in the Champions League, that is what a club like Manchester United needs to do and we didn’t do it so we are disappointed.”
Mourinho could make changes to his starting 11 for the clash against the Seagulls and January arrival Alexis Sanchez, who has only scored once in the league since joining from Arsenal, is a candidate to be dropped.
Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini could all be demoted to the bench too after being criticised for their performances on Tuesday, meaning Scott McTominay, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata may return.
