Manchester United News: Herrera backs Martial for greatness

In the latest Manchester United news, midfielder Ander Herrera says Anthony Martial can become a world class player in the future.

The Frenchman endured a frustrating campaign for Jose Mourinho’s side last season, only starting 18 games in all competitions.

However, his goalscoring record in those starts was good, with the 22-year-old netting nine times, while he amassed eleven goals in total.

Yet, his lack of minutes ultimately harmed him in the long run as Didier Deschamps chose to leave him out of the France squad for the World Cup, costing Martial chance of winning the competition at the first attempt.

Martial has reportedly informed United that he wants to leave this summer, although the Old Trafford hierarchy is unwilling to let that happen, despite competition in the form of Alex Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata.

If he stays with the Red Devils then he will hope to play his part against Leicester City on Friday August 10 in the first Premier League match of the season, with Bet365 installing United as 4/9 favourites to record an opening-day win.

And Herrera, himself only playing a bit-part role last season, is hoping the former Monaco man will stick around, believing he can become one of the best in the world.

“He’s very talented,” the Spanish midfielder said. “He can be one of the best players in the world and I think he is very focused this season to smash it.

“When you have players like Anthony, like Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez, those kind of players that can change the game.

“If one of them cannot play, we have three or four more so we have lots of options. I think we shouldn’t think that any other club in the Premier League has better players because at least we have as good as the opponents.

“Now it’s all about work, confidence, about keep playing like he did today. I am confident with them because they are all amazing players and Anthony looks very sharp.”
